Father’s concerns
My name is Adam and, until very recently, I considered myself the luckiest man in the world. I have a stable job, a warm home, and a wonderful family alongside my wife and our newborn son. However, building the life I enjoy today was by no means a simple journey.
During my student years, I was nothing more than an average guy, someone who easily blended into the crowd. I went about my days without grand pretensions, until my first true stroke of luck appeared in the form of my beloved Lilith.
Back then, everyone viewed her as an unattainable flower. Not only did she possess a captivating, otherworldly beauty, but she also descended from an extremely wealthy and powerful dynasty. That aura of status and perfection kept most people at a prudent distance; including myself, who never dreamed of exchanging a single word with her.
Yet fate found its way on an ordinary afternoon. Upon returning to the classroom to retrieve an assignment I had forgotten on my desk, I found her sitting there, completely alone. The evening light filtering through the windows illuminated an expression of deep, quiet solitude on her face. To this day, I still don't know where I gathered the courage to break the silence and speak to her, but I will never regret that impulse. If I had the chance to relive that moment, I would do it without a second thought.
What began as a timid conversation bloomed into a sincere friendship, then into a tender romance, and finally into a marriage that felt as natural as breathing.
Of course, our union was not welcomed by everyone. High society looked upon us with disdain, and regrettably, Lilith's own family led that rejection. I discovered her parents had already arranged a betrothal for her, a cold transaction designed to consolidate their lineage's financial power. I opposed it with all my heart, but it was Lilith who made the most drastic choice: she cut ties with her family permanently, surrendered her privileges, and moved into a small apartment with me.
Time flew by amid shared laughter and quiet effort, and soon the news of her pregnancy illuminated our lives. Fortunately, when our baby was born, he inherited his mother's most distinguished features: beautiful silver hair like silk and unusually white eyes. As Lilith explained to me, that eye color isn't rare within her family tree; in fact, the anomaly in her lineage was her having been born with red eyes.
However, the birth was not without its moments of anxiety. There were minor complications during delivery and the baby's first few minutes of life felt endless; it was amidst that fragility and uncertainty that we decided to name him Mireya. Luckily, things seemed to stabilize, though the little one proved to be, to put it mildly, an extremely peculiar baby.
At the moment of his birth, he didn't shed a single tear. He simply drifted into a peaceful sleep, remaining so still that for a brief second we feared the worst. Although the doctors assured us he was out of physical danger, that absolute tranquility was merely the opening chapter to a series of hard-to-explain behaviors.
Shortly after that initial trance, he awoke and began crying with a heartbreaking, alarming intensity—an inconsolable wail that didn't stop until sheer exhaustion surrendered him back to sleep. No one at the hospital could explain what triggered such a reaction, and his quirks only multiplied once we welcomed him home.
He performed actions that left us utterly bewildered. He would go from letting out loudly disproportionate burps for his tiny frame—only to stare at the ceiling afterward with a strange, almost human expression of pride—to lashing out furiously against the toy trucks we bought him. He kicked and struck them with uncanny vehemence. Since they were the only toys he showed any interest in, I assumed that, in his own way, he liked them.
Nevertheless, the night I decided to take one of those trucks away before he snapped it in half, he glared at me with absolute disgust. But what else could I do? Toys cost money, and the poor little guy didn't know his own strength while playing; I was convinced I was doing him a favor by protecting his things. Despite my good intentions, he gave me the silent treatment—so to speak—for two whole days. I like to believe that, in the end, he took pity on me after seeing how genuinely worried I was over his cold shoulder.
Everything in our routine seemed to be gliding along smoothly, wrapped in a warm, comfortable normalcy. Until that night arrived.
Due to an unavoidable work assignment, I had to leave town for two whole days, trusting that everything would be fine at home. I could never have imagined what awaited me upon crossing our threshold once more, nor how radically and irreversibly my life was about to turn.
