Chapter 22. The Sleepy Cat
Succubi Chapter 22. The Sleepy Cat
I shoved that thought deep into the void of my mind and focused on my next mission—eating.
I pulled my lunch out of my bag, setting it down in front of me. The food box had a sleek black design, sturdy but simple, yet I already knew the inside was anything but simple.
The second I popped the lid open, a wave of mouthwatering aroma hit me like a truck.
Holy. Shit.
The presentation alone was insane. Everything was neatly arranged, looking like it had been prepped by a professional chef who had way too much free time. Each ingredient had its own perfect little section, separated into compartments that somehow enhanced their appeal instead of making them look restricted.
I had to stare for a second.
Never in my life had I seen homemade food that looked this damn gorgeous.
Thick, juicy cubes of steak, perfectly seared, lined up neatly in one section. A small container of rich, glossy sauce sat next to them, like an invitation to absolute food nirvana. There were golden roasted potatoes, seasoned and crisp on the outside, soft on the inside. Fresh greens, lightly dressed, looking vibrant as hell.
And that wasn’t even all of it.
There was grilled fish with a side of warm rice, some kind of light, fluffy egg dish, and a separate container filled with fruits cut into perfect little bite-sized cubes.
My brain completely short-circuited.
Lilith made this?
For me?
I glanced at Evelyn’s food, and—yep—exact same quality.
But the way she casually started eating, completely unfazed, told me this was normal for her. Like, yeah, this is just an everyday thing, no big deal.
I swallowed thickly. ‘So this is a succubus thing, huh?’
Not gonna lie—this was a blessing.
I smiled to myself, feeling incredibly lucky. ‘Ah… Thank goodness I got a female dorm. This is a blessing.’
Leon, sitting across from me, was not having the same experience.
His tray? The usual cafeteria food—some meat, mashed potatoes, and vegetables. They all looked good, but not as good as mine.
He took one look at my lunch.
Then Evelyn’s lunch.
Then back to his tray.
Then back to ours.
His entire face cringed. “What the hell?” he said, his voice full of betrayal. “How did you guys prepare such fancy food this morning?”
Evelyn didn’t even look up as she sliced into her steak. “Some of it was leftovers from last night’s dinner. Some of it was leftovers from breakfast this morning.”
Leon’s fork paused mid-air. “…Excuse me.” He narrowed his eyes. “Steak? Did you guys have steak left over last night?”
I swallowed a piece of perfectly seasoned meat before answering. “Lilith cooked a lot of food. We couldn’t eat it all in one go.”
Leon leaned forward, his eyes dark with hunger and desperation. “Dude.” His voice was low. Serious. “Wanna switch?”
I raised an eyebrow. “Huh?”
Leon exhaled. “I don’t mind staying in the girls' dorm.” His expression was dead serious. “I mean it.”
I scoffed. “No.”
Leon groaned. “Why not?!”
I smirked. “Because I like it there.”
Leon crossed his arms. “I’d like it there too.”
I shook my head, stuffing another piece of steak into my mouth. “Nah. All the girls there are not as annoying as my step-sis, and I have a lot of food. So…” I chewed slowly, savoring the absolute god-tier flavor, then looked him dead in the eyes and gave him the biggest b*tch face imaginable.
Leon looked offended. He leaned back, rubbing his temples. “Bro. I’m happy for you. I really am. But you’re killing me here.”
I grinned. “Sucks to be you.”
Leon groaned again, shoving his fork into his sad, dry meat. “I hate this academy.”
Evelyn chuckled softly, sipping from her drink. “Should’ve thought about that before eating all your food last night.”
Leon shot her a dramatic glare. “I was hungry.”
I shrugged. “And now you’re still hungry.”
Leon muttered something about betrayal, but I wasn’t paying attention anymore. I was too busy enjoying my goddamn food.
Lilith’s cooking was actual perfection, and the fact that this was just a casual meal for her made me wonder how insane her full-course feasts were.
I was so damn lucky.
Seriously. High-quality food, a comfortable dorm with no annoying step-sister ruining my life, and an increasing number of people treating me like some kind of walking enigma.
I was enjoying my lunch, relishing every single bite of the glorious steak Lilith had packed for me, when something caught my eye near the cafeteria entrance.
Sera.
Half-asleep. Again.
This girl always looked like she was half in this world, half in the dream realm. Her hair was slightly messy, her expression as unreadable as ever—like she had just been teleported here and hadn’t quite processed reality yet.
I had no idea where she was heading, but her lazy, hesitant shuffle led her toward the cafeteria line in an almost aimless manner.
Which was… weird.
Because Lilith made lunch for all of us.
I paused mid-bite, raising an eyebrow. Sera wasn't the type to ignore free food, especially not when it was cooked by someone as absurdly skilled as Lilith.
I was about to call her over, but then something struck me.
Evelyn’s words from earlier.
‘Demons have their own charm. Even if we don’t try, people notice us. We draw them in.’
And Sera—despite not having a sunshine personality, despite always looking like she could fall asleep standing up at any second—was absolutely no exception.
Some guys in the cafeteria were staring at her. Some were stealing quick glances.
And I realized—Sera was cute as hell.
Not in an obvious way. Not in the bright, outgoing, attention-grabbing way some girls were. But she had that lazy, innocent genius vibe. The kind of natural beauty that didn’t need effort. Like a cat who didn't care about the world but still managed to make people want to pet it.
And before I could even call out to her, something else happened.
A guy—a student from an upper semester—walked up to her.
I frowned, watching as he approached shyly, rubbing the back of his neck like he was working up the courage to do something.
Then, without saying much, he held out a couple of pieces of bread and a milk box.
Sera blinked slowly at the offering.
The guy muttered something—probably something along the lines of "I got extra, so here you go"—and then, after what looked like a painful internal struggle, waved and walked off happily.
Sera?
She just nodded at him.
Nothing else. No thanks, no smile, no words of gratitude.
Just a lazy-ass nod.
Like she had simply accepted a quest reward from an NPC and moved on.
The guy looked way too happy about it.
And that’s when Sera’s gaze finally landed on us.
She locked eyes with me first. Then Evelyn. Then Leon.
After a brief pause, she shuffled over, moving at her signature half-speed pace before stopping beside me.
“Anomaly,” she greeted, her voice as sleepy as ever. “You are here.”
I sighed, setting down my fork. “Yeah, it’s break time. So, I’m here.”
She blinked slowly, then yawned. “Mhm.”
Leon, who had been shoveling food into his mouth just a second ago, froze mid-bite. His eyes flickered between me and Sera, then back again, a deep frown forming on his face.
“…Wait. Who the hell is this?”
Sera, unfazed, turned to me. “Same question for you.”
I snorted. “Yeah. This is Leon. My best friend. He’s, uh… chronically starving.”
Leon scowled. “I am not—” He stopped himself, glanced down at his half-empty tray, then sighed in defeat. “Okay, fine. Maybe a little.”
Sera nodded slowly, as if confirming something to herself.
I gestured between them. “Leon, this is Sera. She’s in my dorm. Try not to freak out when she randomly falls asleep mid-sentence.”
Leon raised an eyebrow, looking her up and down. “She… lives in your dorm?”
Sera nodded. “Mhm.”
Leon blinked. “With the other girls?”
“Mhm.”
Leon turned to me. “Dude.”
I frowned. “What?”
Leon leaned in slightly. “Are you hoarding cute girls in your dorm or something?”
I rolled my eyes. “It’s not like that, you idiot.”
Leon gave me a skeptical look but didn’t push further. Instead, he turned back to Sera, who had barely reacted to any of this.
He stared at her for another second before muttering, “She looks half-dead.”
Sera blinked slowly, tilting her head slightly. “I am half-asleep.”
Leon choked on his drink, coughing into his sleeve. “You’re—what?!”
“She’s always like this,” I explained. “Don’t worry, she functions just fine. Kind of.”
Sera yawned. “Mostly.”
Leon wiped his mouth, still looking like he was processing this information. “Okay. So your dorm has actual god-tier meals, a bunch of girls who apparently aren’t annoying, and now you tell me one of them just walks around looking like she’s permanently sleepwalking?”
“Pretty much.”
Leon shook his head. “Unbelievable.”
I smirked. “Jealous?”
“Extremely.”
Sera, who had been completely unfazed by all of this, casually sat down next to me, placing the bread and milk in front of her.
Leon, who had already been glaring at my food, immediately locked onto hers. “Okay. Hold up.” He pointed at the bread in her hands. “What’s that?”
Sera tilted her head slightly, looking at the food like she had forgotten it was even there. “A guy gave it to me.”
Leon gawked. “For free?!”
Sera nodded.
Leon’s jaw dropped. “How the hell are you getting free food from random guys?”
Evelyn smirked. “It’s called charisma.”
Leon groaned, rubbing his face. “This is unfair.”
I exhaled. “Okay, back up. Why were you even lining up for food? Lilith made lunch for everyone.”
Sera nodded again. “I forgot.”
“…You forgot?”
“Yes.”
Leon let out a frustrated laugh, throwing his hands in the air. “How the hell do you forget something like that?”
Sera blinked. “I woke up late this morning.”
“…And?”
She yawned. “And I forgot my lunch so I needed to buy food.”
I gave her a deadpan look. “But then you saw the line and got lazy, didn’t you?”
She nodded. “Mhm.”
I pinched the bridge of my nose. ‘Of course.’
Leon almost cried. “This is a crime! How could you leave good food alone like that!”
Sera tilted her head slightly and started eating it like it was just another normal meal.
“A question. You’re really just… accepting free food from strangers?” Leon asked.
Sera nodded between bites.
Leon’s eye twitched. “And you don’t find that weird?”
Sera stared at him. “No.”
Leon groaned. “So unfair...”
Evelyn chuckled, sipping her drink. “You’re just jealous.”
Leon pointed at her. “Damn right, I am!”
I smirked. “You could try standing in line and hoping some girl takes pity on you.”
Leon scowled. “I’d die before I start acting cute for food.”
Evelyn smirked. “That’s why you’re suffering.”
I, on the other hand, focused back on Sera.
“So,” I said, watching as she chewed lazily, “you gonna pick up your actual lunch later?”
Sera nodded. “Mhm.”
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
“You’re not just saying that?”
She blinked, her expression unreadable. “Maybe.”
I sighed. “Sera.”
She chewed a little slower, then finally muttered, “I will.”
Evelyn smirked. “Good girl.”
Sera looked at her. “I am not a dog.”
Leon groaned. “Yeah, but at this point, you’re definitely a cat.”
Sera nodded in approval, which only made it worse.
I exhaled, stuffing another bite of steak into my mouth. “Whatever. Just don’t make a habit of accepting random food gifts from admirers, alright?”
Sera blinked at me, then chewed extra slowly before responding. “…But why?”
I nearly choked.
Leon’s jaw dropped.
Evelyn laughed, shaking her head.
Sera? She just kept eating like nothing was weird.
