Chapter 145. My Dating Life
Succubi Chapter 145. My Dating Life
It was not just a regular professor-glance. Oh no. This one? It lingered. Heavy. Like he wasn’t just looking, but processing something. And the way his brows tensed… like I’d just committed high treason.
I blinked.
He blinked.
Evelyn noticed it too, cocking her head with the faintest smirk. She had that look again, the ‘oh this is gonna be fun’ sparkle in her eyes. Girl was too observant for her own good.
Callahan didn’t say anything. Not yet.
Just turned his head away like some character trying to hide his heartbreak mid-battle.
Which would’ve been whatever…
Except his jaw twitched.
His mana flickered.
His boots squeaked slightly on the stone floor as he stepped away.
And somehow…
Somehow…
He looked like I’d just hurt his feelings.
Not like a teacher upset that his students broke some rules. No.
More like… like a jealous ex.
The kind who shows up at your party and sees you smiling with someone new and just quietly walks out with a dramatic raincloud following him.
What the hell?
I squinted after him. “That’s not good…” I muttered under my breath.
“Hm?” Evelyn turned her head toward me. She’d been rummaging in her bag and pulled out a cold isotonic bottle. Pink cap. Chilled with just a bit of condensation, the kind that made you instantly thirsty.
“What’s not good?” she asked, handing it over. Her fingers brushed mine. Warm. Clean. Gentle.
I took it automatically. “Thanks,” I said.
And then gulped half of it like a dehydrated idiot. It tasted like raspberry lightning.
Refreshing. Sharp. A little sweet.
When I lowered the bottle, Evelyn leaned closer. Her towel came up to my cheek. She wiped my face like I was some wounded war hero back from the trenches, slow and careful. I froze.
The towel…
It smelled amazing.
Like lavender soap mixed with that soft shampoo she used. I knew that scent. I’d smelled it before. On her.
I swallowed. Hard.
“Thanks…” I muttered again.
She didn’t stop. “I need to make sure you don’t sweat too much,” she said casually, like this was just part of the job description. “Or you’re going to distance yourself from me again.”
I flinched.
Yeah.
That.
That hit a bit harder than expected.
“I could forget that?” I said, voice lower than I intended.
She didn’t answer. Just looked at me. Not angry. Not sad.
Just… Evelyn.
Sharp. Present. Real.
I exhaled and rubbed the back of my neck. “Right. Yeah.”
And then…
Oh, then I felt it.
The stare.
Not from Ares.
Nope. He was sulking somewhere with his sword and moral crisis.
From Callahan.
Behind me.
I turned slowly.
There he was.
Still in his professor coat.
Monocle catching the sunlight just right.
Mana still lightly trailing from his cuffs.
And his face?
Wounded.
Wounded!
Like I’d kicked his magical cat and then laughed about it.
I cringed so hard my soul twisted into a pretzel.
“…Yes, Professor?” I asked carefully.
He blinked once. Then stepped closer.
His voice was quiet. Not cold. Just… weirdly emotional. “Last night…” he started. “You were with Lilith.”
Okay. That was… random?
He kept going. “And now…”
He sniffed lightly.
“You smell like her.”
He glanced, actually glanced, toward Evelyn, who was still dabbing the side of my face with that murderously good-smelling towel.
I blinked. “Uh…”
He took another step closer.
“Why?” he whispered.
Whispered.
Still dramatic as hell, like he was accusing me of betrayal on stage in some tragedy.
I stared.
Evelyn stared.
I opened my mouth.
“Because I’m wearing her cologne?” I offered.
“It’s a light mist,” Evelyn added casually, still wiping my neck. “I lent it to him this morning.”
Callahan leaned forward.
Narrowed his eyes.
“Are you telling the truth?” he asked, barely audible now. His brows were furrowed like I’d just betrayed a sacred oath.
Evelyn didn’t flinch. “Evan’s telling the truth, Professor. He just forgot to bring his own cologne. He’s a boy. Boys do that.”
I cleared my throat. “Yeah.” It was a better excuse than I didn’t bathe.
Callahan took a slow breath. He looked like he was trying so hard to stay composed. Like his brain was rebooting but the emotional module kept erroring out.
“I see,” he said finally. But his voice was tight. Stretched.
He glanced again between us.
“You look… comfortable,” he said stiffly.
“Professor,” I said, trying to rescue whatever dignity I had left, “is there… a problem?”
He adjusted his monocle. It sparkled ominously.
His lips pressed into a thin line.
“I just…” He hesitated. “Wanted to ensure… decorum. Between students.”
I nodded slowly, holding my cringe. “Right. Professional. Got it.”
Callahan’s hand twitched. His barrier magic fizzled slightly like his emotions were leaking through his mana. “You’re not… exclusive, then?”
“…Huh?” I blinked. “With who?”
“With… anyone!” he snapped, then immediately covered his mouth like he’d just said something deeply unteacherly.
Evelyn blinked. “Wait. Are you asking about my dating life or Evan’s?”
“No!” Callahan said, obviously lying. “I mean. Yes. I mean— I don’t care! I was just making sure no policies were being broken and—”
“Are there policies on smelling like someone?” I asked, voice dry.
“Not specifically,” Callahan muttered. “Ugh!!!” Callahan made a noise like a kettle boiling in slow motion.
“Nevermind!” he said, flustered now. “I am clearly not needed here. Good day!”
And he spun on his heel.
Spun.
Like a cape-wearing drama prince.
I stared at his retreating back.
“…What the hell just happened?” I whispered.
Evelyn grinned and patted my arm. “You got sniffed by a jealous professor.”
“That’s not a thing!”
“It is now.”
I stared after him again.
Callahan walked stiffly down the corridor, muttering something under his breath.
“Unbelievable,” I muttered. “Absolutely unhinged.”
“You love it,” Evelyn teased.
“I tolerate it.”
“Uh-huh.”
I took another sip of the drink. “You still have the towel?”
She dangled it in front of me.
I snatched it and wiped my neck again.
She raised an eyebrow. “You’re gonna steal that, aren’t you?”
“Nope.” Actually, Yes.
Totally keeping this.
“Come on,” she said, looping her arm through mine like it was the most normal thing in the world. “Let’s get get back to the class. Before Callahan builds a magic wall between us or files a report about ‘unauthorized scent proximity’.”
I laughed. Couldn’t help it.
This school was insane.
