Chapter 582: Bad News

Gray Knights camp.

A week had passed without a single word from the main army. A week of suffocating, oppressive silence.

Leonardo stood motionless on a high ridge overlooking the desolate landscape. The sun was a merciless, burning eye in a cloudless sky, beating down on the cracked earth and withered vegetation. A hot wind howled through the canyons, carrying with it the stench of sulfur and decay.

He didn't like this long silence, especially after learning what happened to the main army from the heat, sandstorm, and loss of supplies.

He had already sent scouts to investigate, but not a single one had returned.

They'd been sending pigeons, magical messengers, even prayer signals—nothing. The communication was dead. Cursed. Every attempt had failed, either intercepted or simply... dissolving into the thick, unnatural gloom that clung to the land like a shroud.

A cold knot of dread tightened in his stomach.

He turned, his gray armor whirring softly, and looked down at the fortified camp below. His men, the Gray Knights, were working with a grim, quiet efficiency, sharpening their weapons, checking their gear, and reinforcing their defenses. They were the best of the best, the elite, the iron fist of the church, even if they called them sinners.

But even they were on edge. The oppressive atmosphere of the land was getting to them. The whispers of doubt were starting to spread.

"Commander," a voice said behind him.

Leonardo turned to see his second-in-command, a tall, gaunt man named Marak, standing there. His face was pale, his eyes wide with a feverish intensity.

"We have to do something," Marak said, his voice a strained whisper. "We can't just wait here to die. We have to move. We have to find them."

"And go where?" Leonardo asked, his voice flat, devoid of emotion. "Into that cursed wasteland? To get lost like the scouts? To get picked off one by one by whatever is out there?"

"Better to die fighting than to rot in this hole!" Marak insisted, his hands clenching into fists. "We are Gray Knights! We are not cowards! We do not hide!"

Leonardo looked at him, at the desperation in his eyes. He understood. He felt it too. The urge to do something, anything, to break this suffocating paralysis.

But he was the commander. He had to be the one to think, to plan, to make the hard choices.

"We have our orders, Marak," he said, his voice hard as steel. "We are to wait. To secure the camp. To be the backup."

"Backup for what?! For a ghost army?!" Marak's voice rose, a hysterical edge creeping into it. "They're gone, Leonardo! They're all gone! And we're next!"

The other knights nearby stopped what they were doing and turned to look at them, their faces grim and uncertain.

Leonardo knew he had to act, to regain control before the panic spread.

He walked up to Marak and stood face to face with him, their helmets almost touching.

"We are the Gray Knights," Leonardo said, his voice a low, dangerous growl. "Sinners in the eyes of the church. If we act without orders, we are nothing but a rabble of rogue knights. We will be hunted down and executed, not by the enemy, but by our own people. And our deaths will be for nothing. We will be a footnote in a history book, a cautionary tale of pride and disobedience."

He paused, letting his words sink in.

"But if we follow our orders, if we maintain our discipline, if we are here when they need us... We will be the saviors. We will be the ones who turn the tide. We will be the ones who are remembered as heroes."

He placed a hand on Marak's shoulder.

"So I ask you, Marak. Do you want to be a footnote... or a hero?"

Marak looked at him, his chest heaving, a storm of emotions raging in his eyes. He was a good man, a loyal knight, but he was also a man on the edge.

Slowly, he took a deep breath and let it out.

"Hero," he said, his voice a strained whisper. "I want to regain my honor."

"Good," Leonardo said, patting his shoulder. "Then get back to work. We have a long-"

He didn't get the chance to finish before a shout came from the watchtower.

"RIDER APPROACHING!"

"!!!" Leonardo and Marak both snapped their heads toward the watchtower. Their hearts leaped into their throats.

A single rider, a blur of motion, was galloping towards the camp, a cloud of dust trailing behind him.

He was riding hard, desperation in every lunge of his horse. His armor was dented and scarred, his cloak tattered and torn. He looked like he had been through hell.

But he was one of theirs. A paladin. A survivor.

"OPEN THE GATES!" Leonardo roared, his voice filled with a sudden, desperate hope.

The heavy iron gates of the camp creaked open, and the rider galloped through, his horse stumbling and collapsing from exhaustion a few feet inside.

The rider, a young paladin, no older than twenty, fell from the saddle, landing in a heap on the dusty ground. He was gasping for breath, his body trembling violently, his eyes wide with a terror so profound it seemed to have seeped into his very bones.

"Water," he croaked, his lips cracked and bleeding.

A knight rushed forward with a waterskin, but Leonardo held up a hand, stopping him.

"Report," Leonardo commanded, his voice sharp, cutting through the chaos.

The young paladin looked up at him, his eyes a mixture of relief and utter despair.

"They're... they're gone," he stammered, tears streaming down his face. "All of them... dead... or captured."

Leonardo's heart sank. The cold knot of dread in his stomach turned into a block of ice.

"Speak clearly," he said, his voice dangerously calm.

The young paladin took a shaky breath, trying to compose himself.

"We were... ambushed," he said, his words tumbling out in a rush. "The black-armored warriors... the angels... they... they..."

He hesitated, his face a mask of horror, as if he were reliving the nightmare.

"Spit it out, boy!" Marak snapped, grabbing him by the front of his tunic.

The young paladin didn't speak. Instead, he reached into his chest and pulled out a letter, a letter sealed with a black skull sigil.

"The enemy... she told me to give you this," he stammered, his eyes wide with a mixture of fear and reverence.

Leonardo snatched the letter from his hand. He stared at the black skull sigil, a symbol he had never seen before. It felt... wrong. Corrupted.

He broke the seal and unfolded the parchment. The handwriting was elegant, flowing, a beautiful script that seemed to dance on the page. But the words... The words were a poison dagger to the heart.

"To the leader of the so-called Gray Knights," it began. "I am Morgana, the messenger of the goddess and the queen of this land. Your army came to my home uninvited, with fire and sword. They sought to 'cleanse' my land, to murder my people. They have failed."

"Morgana..." Leonardo whispered, the name sending a shiver down his spine.

Morgana thought about changing her name or using her sister's, but in the end, she decided to keep her name. She was proud of it, and she wanted her enemies to know it. To fear it.

Moreover, no one would think that a goddess could walk the land of mortals.

"Your Grandmaster, Gideon, is my guest," the letter continued. "And so are the rest of your precious paladins and inquisitors. They are... learning the error of their ways. They are being... enlightened."

Leonardo raised an eyebrow, genuinely confused by her words.

"And I have a proposition for you," the letter continued. "I have a price for their lives. A steep one, I assure you. You have one week to inform whoever is in charge and one week to prepare for a meeting. Fail to do so..."

The letter ended with a single, chilling sentence.

"I will send you back their heads... one by one."

The Gray Knights stared at the letter, their faces pale, their eyes wide with a mixture of shock and disbelief. This was not a simple battle cry. This was a personal, humiliating insult. A declaration of absolute dominance.

The goddess's messenger had their Grandmaster. She had their army. She was playing with them, toying with them like a cat with a mouse.

"We have to go," Marak said, his voice a low, determined growl. "We have to get them back."

Leonardo looked at him, at the fire in his eyes. He knew that Marak was not alone in his sentiment. Every knight in the camp felt the same. They were sinners, yes, but they were still men of honor. They would not abandon their brothers-in-arms to a fate worse than death.

But Leonardo was also a pragmatist. He knew that a frontal assault would be suicide. They were fighting against an unknown, but clearly powerful, enemy. An enemy that had defeated an army of thirty thousand in a single night.

"No," Leonardo said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion. "This is beyond our power. We will head back to Vandor and inform the king."
