Chapter 569: Tempest Spear

"SHIELDS!!!!"

The corrupted primal elves unleashed another volley of their disgusting arrows. The sky went dark, blotting out the little light that managed to pierce the dense canopy. The Gray Knights raised their shields, forming a shimmering wall of steel and faith, but they knew it wouldn't be enough.

The arrows weren't just arrows. They were carriers of a plague. They splintered on impact, releasing a cloud of the same yellow poison that had weakened them before.

Men fell, screaming, their bodies wracked with convulsions as the poison did its work. The line wavered, but it held.

For now.

Leonardo fought like a man possessed. His sword, a beacon of holy light, cleaved through the spider-like creatures that swarmed around him. But for every one he killed, two more took their place. The ground was a carpet of twitching, black chitin.

He could feel the drain on his powers. That wave of light had taken a lot out of him, and he could feel the poison's cold fingers trying to wrap around his heart. He was stronger than the others, a Paladin Chapter Master even before his fall, but he was not a god.

He looked up at the trees, at the corrupted elves, and he knew. This was a coordinated attack. The spiders were the hammer, the elves were the anvil. They were being herded, funneled, and slaughtered.

"My lord! The right flank is collapsing!" a knight's voice screamed, desperate and ragged, over the din of battle.

Leonardo turned. A tide of massive, centipede-like creatures, their bodies armored in black chitin, their legs tipped with razor-sharp bone, was breaking through their defenses. Knights were being torn apart, their armor ripped open like tin cans.

"Marak! To the right! Reinforce the flank!" Leonardo roared into his communication crystal, his voice strained.

There was no reply. Just static.

A cold dread washed over Leonardo. Marak's unit was the rearguard. If they were gone...

"BRING DOWN THE TREES!" Leonardo yelled, a desperate idea forming in his mind. "BRING THEM DOWN!"

He pointed his sword at the skeletal trees where the wood elves were perched, and a beam of pure light shot out, striking the trunk of a massive, dead tree. The tree groaned, splintered, and then crashed down, taking a dozen of the corrupted elves with it.

The other knights followed his lead, their own faith-fueled attacks bringing down more trees. The clearing was chaos, a maelstrom of falling timber, screaming monsters, and desperate prayers.

But it wasn't enough. The wood elves were agile, leaping from one branch to another, their arrows still finding their marks.

Leonardo was getting desperate. He was losing men, losing the battle, and there was nothing he could do. He was a chess player, and he was being outplayed at every turn.

Then he felt it again. That motherly presence. But this time, it wasn't just a feeling. It was a voice, a whisper that echoed in his mind.

[A little help?]

"!!!" Leonardo froze. The voice was feminine, warm, and... amused. It was a voice he had never heard before, but it felt... familiar.

'Who... who are you?' he thought, his mind reeling.

[A friend,] the voice replied. [Or maybe an enemy. It depends on how you see it. But for now, let's just say I'm an interested observer. And I don't like it when my favorite toys get broken.]

'A toy? Are you... Are you the one who's behind this?' Leonardo asked, a surge of anger rising in him.

[Me? Oh, heavens no] the voice chuckled. [I'm just a spectator. But I must admit, the show is getting a bit boring. So, how about a little... intervention?]

'I don't need your help, demon!' Leonardo snarled, his pride getting the better of him.

[Oh, but you do,] the voice said, a hint of pity in her tone. [You're about to die. And I can't let that happen. Not yet. So, what do you say? Do you want your men to live?]

Leonardo hesitated. He didn't care about his own death, but he couldn't bear the thought of his men, his brothers, being slaughtered like animals. They were sinners, yes, but they were good men. They deserved better than this.

'... What do you want?' he asked, his voice heavy with resignation.

[Nothing much,] the voice said. [Just a little... favor. A small token of your appreciation. And maybe... a kiss.]

'A kiss?' Leonardo repeated, incredulous. 'You want me to kiss you? I don't even know who you are!'

[You will,] the voice promised. [Now, do we have a deal?]

Leonardo looked around, at the desperate battle, at the dying men, at the overwhelming odds. He had no choice.

'... Deal,' he said, the word tasting like betrayal.

[Excellent,] the voice purred. [Now, close your eyes, form a prayer gesture, and repeat after me.]

Leonardo closed his eyes, shutting out the horrific sights of the slaughter, and slammed his gauntlets together in a rigid, desperate prayer gesture. He could feel the cold metal of his armor vibrating as a sudden, unnatural stillness washed over his internal senses, contrasting violently with the chaos outside.

The voice in his mind lost its playful purr, shifting into a resonant, booming cadence that demanded absolute submission from the fabric of reality itself.

[Repeat it,] she commanded. [And mean it.]

Leonardo drew a ragged breath and let the alien words fall from his lips, each syllable feeling like a shard of ice forming in his soul, binding him to the unseen force.

"O ancient storm that crowns the heavens."

A sudden, oppressive pressure dropped over the clearing. The air grew thick with the sharp, metallic taste of ozone. The yellow poison cloud from the elven arrows began to violently dissipate, pushed away by a rising gale.

"Hear my call and answer in thunder."

The very ground trembled. Not the subtle vibration of the giant spiders, but a deep, foundational shudder as if the swamp itself were waking from a long slumber.

"Let the clouds become my forge."

"Let lightning become my spear."

"Let the sky itself cast judgment upon the wicked."

Arcs of blinding, crackling gold electricity began to bleed out of Leonardo's closed palms. The light was so intense it bled through his eyelids. The spider-like creatures closest to him recoiled, their many eyes bursting from the sheer radiance.

"Descend! TEMPEST SPEAR!"

Leonardo snapped his eyes open.

In his hands, the prayer gesture parted, tearing open a rift of pure, condensed divinity. He wasn't holding a weapon; he was holding a trapped tempest. A massive, jagged bolt of roaring, brilliant gold-white lightning crackled in his grip, humming with the force of a dying star—the spitting image of the mythic spears flung by ancient lords.

With a primal scream, he thrust his arm upward, unleashing the spear upon the heavens.

The result was instantaneous.

The entire forest went silent for a single, heartbeat-long eternity.

Then came the sound.

It was not the sharp crack of a lightning strike. It was the deafening roar of the sky itself being torn open.

Hundreds of golden spears of pure, divine lightning descended in a relentless, terrifying barrage, like the wrath of a betrayed god striking not randomly, but with precision. They slammed into the skeletal trees, not burning them, but causing them to erupt from within, their cores turning to incandescent glass before shattering into dust.

The corrupted wood elves fared no better. Those agile shadows in the branches became blazing torches, screaming as the tempest spears found them mid-leap. The malevolent red light in their eyes was snuffed out by the overwhelming golden glow, leaving behind nothing but cinders that the wind greedily scattered.

Below, the devastation was absolute. The centipede-like monstrosities that had been ripping through the right flank were obliterated. The ground itself was scoured, the black mud fused into jagged, obsidian-like glass. The spider tide simply vanished, vaporized into a fine mist of acrid smoke and chitinous residue.

The Gray Knights watched in awed horror, holding their breath beneath their dented shields.

In a matter of seconds, the battle was over.

And then, as suddenly as it had begun, the tempest ceased.

Leonardo stood at the center of the maelstrom, arms still raised, body trembling with power that was not entirely his own. The lightning did not burn him. It sang through his veins, a wild, ecstatic fury that drowned out the poison's chill for a moment. His armor glowed white-hot at the edges, holy sigils flaring back to life across his pauldrons.

For the first time since the ambush began, there was silence. A true, profound silence.

The remaining spiders skittered backward in blind panic, many of them missing legs or trailing smoke. The elves' arrows stopped. A few surviving archers fled deeper into the twisted woods, their guttural cries fading beneath the thunder.

The Gray Knights, those still standing, let out a ragged cheer that was half-prayer, half-sob. They reformed their battered shield wall around their Chapter Master, faces streaked with blood and grime, eyes wide with awe and fear.

Leonardo lowered his arms. The last few spears flickered out above the treeline, leaving afterimages burned into the air. The oppressive pressure in the clearing eased, but the ozone tang remained, sharp and victorious.

He breathed hard, chest heaving. The power had been glorious. Terrible. Addictive.

[There we are,] the voice purred again, warm and satisfied, like a mother watching her child win a particularly brutal game. [Much better. I hate it when the fun ends too quickly.]

"You… What did you do to me?" Leonardo's jaw tightened.

[Nothing you won't thank me for later,] she replied, a hint of laughter threading through his mind. [I simply… lent you a spark. Your faith is strong, little paladin, but it was placed in the wrong hands. It needed a bigger god to really shine.]

Leonardo's anger flared at the insult to Uriel, but it was quickly smothered by exhaustion. The power had vanished as quickly as it had arrived, leaving behind an emptiness that the poison eagerly rushed to fill. He stumbled and caught himself on a knight's shoulder. His vision swam.

"Steady, my lord!" the knight yelled, steadying him with one gauntleted hand while fending off a wounded spider with the other.

Leonardo shook his head, trying to clear the fog. He looked at his hands. They were still glowing faintly with a residual golden light, but it was fading fast.

[Alright, I have to go now. It was fun playing with you, Leo. We'll do it again soon.] The presence lingered for one last moment. [Remember your promise.]

Then, a final whisper, softer than all the others.

[And don't forget to give me a kiss.]
