Chapter 445. Endless Cycle
Seven Sins System Chapter 445. Endless Cycle
Puriel’s gaze softened slightly, but the tension between us remained.
“You know it’s not that simple,” she replied, her voice softer now, almost tender. “The thread of fate binds us for a reason.”
I looked at her, my expression weary. “And what balance can there be between light and darkness? Between a goddess and a devil?” The bitterness in my voice was clear.
Puriel fell silent, her eyes searching mine for something neither of us could articulate.
Finally, I sighed and shook my head, resignation settling over me like a shroud. "Let’s just act as we should," I said, my voice filled with a weary acceptance. "Just like in the past, but without fighting. Because yeah, we can't. After all... the thread is a bond created from our past, due to our misunderstanding."
Puriel’s eyes flickered with a mixture of emotions—regret, frustration, and a trace of sadness. I continued, sensing this was the only path left to us.
"Or... we could act as if we are partners in this mission," I suggested, trying to inject some practicality into the situation. "Business partners," I emphasized, wanting to set clear boundaries. "No more than that."
She nodded slowly, a thoughtful look crossing her face. “Business partners,” she repeated, as if testing the words on her tongue. “That might be the best way to move forward. We both have our own reasons for being here, and working together—at least in a professional capacity—might help us achieve our goals without further conflict.”
But even as she spoke, I could hear the hurt in her voice. It mirrored my own.
Puriel excused herself, turning away from me.
"I’ll give you some room then," she said. She didn’t wait for my response, and I didn’t try to stop her. I was tired, tired of the endless cycle of misunderstandings and clashing perspectives.
Half an hour ago, we had acted like children, running around a playground, carefree and full of life. But returning to our mission had only brought our differences into sharper focus.
Puriel used her teleportation skill and disappeared. I stood there, staring at the spot where she had been, a mixture of irritation and frustration churning inside me.
Was any of this worth it? The thought gnawed at me, a persistent doubt that I couldn’t shake.
Red stepped closer. “My Lord, are you alright?” she asked, her voice gentle but concerned.
I sighed, running a hand through my hair. “I’ll be fine, Red. This... this is just complicated.”
She nodded, understanding without needing further explanation. “I’m here to support you, no matter what,” she said, her voice filled with quiet determination.
I turned to her, a small, tired smile tugging at my lips. “I know. And I appreciate it more than you can imagine.”
Red stood there and didn’t answer me with words, yet I could see her usual confidence marred by a flicker of hesitation. Her eyes darted to the side before meeting mine again.
“What is it?” I asked, deciding to ask.
She hesitated a moment longer, then spoke. “The thread of fate you mentioned... What is it exactly?”
I exhaled, moved to my chair and sank into it. “Sit down,” I said, gesturing to the chair opposite mine.
Red complied, her eyes never leaving mine. I took a deep breath before beginning.
“The thread of fate is a binding force, a connection between two beings that goes beyond physical or emotional ties. It’s something deeper, more profound. It’s a bond that was forged long before we even realized it.”
She listened intently, her gaze unwavering.
“I discovered it recently,” I continued, my voice steady but tinged with a hint of resignation. “Puriel and I... we’re what you might call fated partners. The thread binds us in such a way that I can’t harm her, no matter how much I might want to in anger. That goes for her.”
Red’s eyes widened slightly. “So that’s why you didn’t fight her,” she said, the pieces falling into place. “I was confused. It’s not like you to hold back.”
I scoffed, a bitter smile curling my lips.
“Believe me, Red, I’m still the Lord of Wrath. My patience hasn’t miraculously expanded over a couple of centuries. But this thread... it’s like a leash, preventing me from acting on my impulses,” I explained.
Red looked thoughtful.
“It must be difficult,” she said softly, her empathy evident in her voice.
“It is,” I admitted, the admission coming more easily than I’d expected. “It complicates everything. Our past, our present... it’s all tangled up in this thread. It’s a reminder of what we once were and what we can never be.”
Red reached out, her hand resting on the edge of the desk between us. “You’ll figure it out, my Lord. You always do.”
I nodded and smiled bitterly.
“I hope,” I said, my tone uncertain. The situation was pressing down on me, and for the first time in a long while, I felt a sliver of doubt creep into my mind. Red reached out and touched my hand, her fingers warm and steady against my skin.
“Do you want to bind the contract now?” she asked softly, her voice carrying a blend of determination and vulnerability.
I looked at her without answering her question. The logical part of me knew that forming the contract would solidify her loyalty, bind her to me in the way I needed.
But there was a gnawing hesitation inside me, a reluctance that I couldn’t easily dismiss.
For the first time in my long existence, I found myself not in the mood for sex. A devil like me, unenthusiastic about one of our most primal acts. Remarkable, wasn’t it?
