I felt the weight of this mornings revelations pressing down on me as we made our way through the city after leaving the guild. Ella was walking to my left, her steps steady but her expression distant. To my right, the Duchess maintained her composed demeanor, but I sensed a storm brewing beneath the surface that she didn't bother hiding.
"Since we've confirmed that the skill is effective," The Duchess broke the silence with her voice carrying a heavy sigh.
"I will go next." She said simply but her words struck me like thunder as I struggled to keep my emotions hidden behind a blank face.
"Are you sure?" I asked with my voice betraying a hint of discomfort and concern
"Yes I am" The Duchess nodded as her eyes filled with apparent resolution.
"I see," I replied gritting my teeth holding any other words from escaping my lips.
I wanted nothing more than to tell her not to do it, To say that one sacrifice was enough but I forced myself to keep quiet despite my raging emotions that wouldn't calm down.
"Duchess unlike me you're still a noblewoman," Ella chimed in with her tone heavy with worry.
"If you have second thoughts then maybe…" She glanced at the Duchess who instantly cut her off.
"I appreciate your kindness Ella but I'm as much a member of this party as you are" She shook her head with a gaze filled with resolve.
"It's my duty to get stronger to assist the hero in his journey." She turned her head and looked at me as I felt unsettled by her unwavering gaze.
"You've already made up your mind I understand," Ella said nodding as if she comprehended the Duchess's firm stance.
"Just remember it's fine to change your mind no one will judge you," I added giving her one last chance to reconsider but from the look in her eye I realized she wouldn't.
*********
I went to bed early, hoping to quiet my busy mind but unfortunately sleep seemed to eluded me. After tossing and turning for what seemed like hours i finally gave up and left my room, The hallway was silent and I couldn't help but glance at Ella's door as I walked by, I sighed slipping silently through the inn's corridors and out back into the cool night air.
"You're up as well?" A voice rang out startling me as I turned to see the Duchess leaning against the inn's wall.
My heart instantly raced seeing her beauty underneath the moonlight and it sped up seeing the nightgown that clung to her shapely figure, The most noticeable was the deep cut on the front of the gown that caused her large breasts to bulge against the fabric creating a lewd valley of milky flesh.
"Yea lot on my mind," I answered forcing a small smile and trying to ignore her beauty and her bulging bosom.
"Me too," the Duchess sighed looking up at the night sky before she turned her gaze back to me and I saw the storm of emotions raging in her eyes.
"About the skill," She spoke suddenly with a more firm voice making me straighten in seriousness.
"I want you to be there," The duchess continued with her words sending shock waves through me.
'Be there?' I was wondering if she was joking but after seeing the calmness in her gaze I knew that this wasn't some sort of prank.
"Are you sure?" I asked with my heart racing.
"The thought of being with a man alone disgusts me," The duchess admitted with her face contorting with discomfort as she bit her lip before continuing.
"But you're someone I trust with my life." Trust filled her eyes making them almost shine even in the dim light.
"With you being there I will feel much more comfortable and... safe," She added and her vulnerability made me blush slightly.
The truth was that I didn't want to witness such a scene, Seeing Ella make such a sacrifice left my heart almost numb and anymore then that I felt as if I might lose my sanity but if the Duchess was willing to go through with it then knew I had to show resolve and agree to her request.
"I understand," I said nodding my head as I tried to hide the stiffness in my tone.
"Thank you," The duchess smiled with a mix of relief and gratitude in her eyes.
We stared at each other for a couple of seconds and it felt as if there was a string connecting us. It was only after a couple seconds did she sigh once more and walk back toward the door. I couldn't help but peak at her bouncing breasts as she came beside me before she placed a hand on my shoulder, a gesture that felt both reassuring and heavy with unspoken emotion.
"I'll contact Leon in the morning," The duchess spoke calmly and her words echoed in my head as she disappeared back into the inn leaving me alone with my thoughts under the night sky.
I stared up at the stars, feeling the weight of the coming days pressing down on me. The decisions we were making, the sacrifices we were preparing for, all felt overwhelmingly significant.
