Chapter 39. Curiosity

I returned to the underground society together with Arcania. Our feet stepped through the unkempt courtyard accompanied by the sound of the wind and the dry leaves that ruffed around us. My mind continued to drift in doubt with what had just happened. It's strange ... Too strange ... How can a high demon be defeated so easily? Even I can defeat her easier than the demon hunters in the cave. Did she just pretend? But I have cut off her head and destroyed her body. Either high demons or even demon lords will die if they are beheaded. But despite I have taken the best precautions, my feelings remain uneasy and my suspicion is bothering me to no end. My instincts gave me an alarm but I didn't know what is it.

I just about to examine the only trace left for me. I took the poison pouch that I slipped between my breasts but I couldn't find it. I stopped my steps and touched my breast from side to front to examined it.

"Huh? Did it fall? It's impossible."

Although my breast is not as big as Arcania, the gap in the middle of it is very narrow and there is almost no space there, in addition, my outfit is tight. The possibility for its fall from there is very small. Arcania also stopped her steps and stared at me with a confused expression.

"Are you missing something?" she said.

But I did not answer her, instead swept my gaze trailing along the path that we had passed but nothing. I closed my eyes trying to concentrate on the scent of poison. The wind blew hard, it would be difficult for me to catch the poison scent in open space like this. I just hoped I would be able to catch a little bit of it.

I could smell the human's scent waiting in the carriages around us, animals and also hybrid-beasts. I could smell the decaying leaves, wood and demon... Huh ?! I opened my eyes in surprise. Not only the smell of demon but I can feel she has the same power as me.

"That succubus is still alive!"

"Arcania goes back to Diorix. I'll catch up with you later," I ordered as I moved quickly in the direction the power came from. I followed the trace, but only halfway through the trail disappeared. My feet continued to take me to the place where I killed the woman while my claws were ready to attack her.

But I did not find anyone there, only dry leaves that ruffled in the wind. I swept my gaze around me to confirm the situation but I did not find anything, even the woman's head was gone and I could not smell the blood that soaked the ground around me. As if nothing ever happened there.

I assumed she was the one who took the poison back from me while we fought. I racked my brain trying to find the clue that was left behind, at least something that could be used as a hint. What was her purpose? Why did she want to kill the entire underground society? But one thing for sure, based on her actions I'm sure her purpose is not to 'eat'.

I immediately thought of the bull demon I had defeated earlier. Even though I wasn't sure it was still alive, I wished at least I could find something from it. I walked along the destroyed tree's trail and found that the bull demon was still lying under the last tree with a broken body. It's arms and legs crippled, fresh blood still flowing out between its fangs.

I examined the demon bull corpse, hoping to find something from it. But nothing ... I gritted my teeth and swung my claws at the tree next to me in frustration.

-Brraakkk!

The tree fell, a clean-cut was visible in the trunk. I lost her trace and it pissed me off.

I took a deep breath trying to calm myself. My mind sank into deep thoughts. I tried to retraced what the woman had done. Why did she want to kill the entire underground society? And who benefits the most from it?

I paused at my last thought.

The most benefited if underground society destroyed is only the kingdom! Underground society is a place for outcasts, where criminals gather. This place is closed and rarely known by people, let alone death is common here. This is the best place to get rid of people without anyone knowing it.

As soon as I realized the possibility of the kingdom of Aeros being the mastermind behind this incident, I quickly moved my feet back to the underground society.

"Everyone, please be safe!"
