Chapter 311 – Thugs
I confidently walked back the way I came in. Selnic items were too big to allow me to leave for another continent. Whether he believed my bluff or not didn’t matter. He couldn’t take the risk at all, or his head would be the one to fly instead of mine if anything went wrong.
I heard his voice just as I was about to leave through the main entrance.
“Stop him! Don’t let him leave!”
The same guards who stopped me before hurriedly took their weapons out, blocking my way menacingly. I turned to the man behind me with a mocking grin.
“What are you going to do? Keep me here?”
“You think we won’t? I told you, playing tricks with us will cost you a lot.”
“Go ahead, then. Tomorrow, the Miwai company will cease to exist.”
My threat had no effect whatsoever.
“Catch him!”
He ordered the guards again, who walked toward me, their sel out. It seemed I needed to nudge them a bit more.
“Did you forget? I’m not protected by Geola’s city hall. I’m under the Lady’s direct protection, Angin Vejas herself. She knows I’m here. I’m curious what she’ll do when I don’t come back.”
This time, they all stopped in their tracks. They didn’t look like they believed me, but that was the power of invoking the city’s guardian’s name in this place. The guards sent a questioning glance at the man, who didn’t look so certain anymore.
“Nonsense!”
“Really? I can see you’re aware of it. There’s no way you didn’t investigate me, right?”
He pierced me with a dirty glare, which I completely ignored. No one moved anymore, waiting for the man’s next move. Eventually, he clenched his fist a few times before releasing the tension in his body.
“Come back inside. I’ll try to arrange a meeting with the head.”
He couldn’t kill me, he couldn’t kidnap me, he couldn’t hurt me, but he still wanted access to my secrets. In other words, negotiating was his only remaining option.
“Should have done that from the start.”
His face twisted at my remark. He turned back brusquely, barking with rancor.
“Follow me!”
Frankly, this man didn’t feel like a merchant at all. He was right on the same level as the street thugs that swarmed the slums. Just the fact that someone like him had an office in the company’s headquarters spoke about what sort of business they were. And yet, this was exactly the sort of thing that would be the trigger to their downfall.
We went back inside the building. There, he asked one of the guards working in the area to follow us to his office. He pointed at the chair in front of his desk.
“Wait here. I’ll be back.”
He whispered a few words to the guard, who nodded, before leaving the room. The guard watched me carefully, monitoring my every move. With nothing else to do, I checked around the room to see if anything was interesting. There were documents here and there, but not that many. It was clear that this man’s job wasn’t related to paperwork. Still, I wondered how many of the documents lying around were compromising. I was stopped when I reached out for one of them.
“Don’t touch anything.”
I retracted my hand, sending a warm smile at the guard, who only frowned at how brazen I was. With nothing else to do, I sat in the chair, waiting peacefully. Getting an appointment with the head of the company was no easy task because the man only appeared again after two hours had passed. He looked around the room and spoke a few words with the guard before turning his attention back to me.
“Come with me.”
“Are we meeting with the head?”
“That’s right. You'd better behave. He isn’t as tolerant as I am.”
If he wasn’t as tolerant as this man, was he some sort of serial killer? I was sure the one in front of me had plenty of sins and crimes under his belt. It made sense for his boss to have ordered most of it.
This time, we took the stairs straight to the fourth floor, the highest floor in the building. It was also the one with the most security around. We stopped in front of a large double door, with the man knocking on it with some apprehension.
“Come in.”
The voice was more poised than expected from a criminal. We entered, revealing the office of one of the most powerful individuals on the continent. It was large, with a massive desk in the middle, and several bookshelves on both sides. There was even a corner with a cabinet filled with alcohol, all looking like the expensive type.
After a quick look around, I focused my attention on the two people in the room. One was a rank 6 woman, who felt like a personnel guard. The other was the company head himself, sitting behind the desk.
Object: elk man.
Wealth level: wearing a high-quality shirt, the rest is hidden under the desk. Probably wealthy.
Power level: amount of sel in his body: 6999, rank 6 stuck in front of the wall, earth affinity. Muscle power: maybe 40. Estimated to be an earth sorcerer. Adding muscles multiplier for being a sorcerer: +400 to power level score. Adding a two-factor multiplier to account for hidden moves and trump cards. Estimated maximum power level at 14 798: can handle most everything. Harmful potential: slightly dangerous.
He nodded at our arrival.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Fradorant Miwai.”
“I’m Tila Urtek, nice to meet you.”
“I heard you wanted to meet me?”
“That’s right. I believe we have something important to talk about.”
“I see. Please sit.”
He indicated one of the many chairs in front of his desk. Contrary to what I expected, he seemed like a calm and reasonable person. Or, to be exact, someone adept at hiding his thoughts and feelings. He glanced at the man who came with me.
“You sit with us.”
“Yes, sir.”
His attitude was extremely meek now, a complete reversal of what it had been with me.
