Angelina walked slowly to center of the duelling mat, her breathing steadying as she locked her eyes onto the target. She raised her wand, braced her boots, and yelled, "Confringo!"
A bright fiery orange light exploded from the tip of her wand. The jet of pressurized magic launched through the air, striking the first wooden mannequin square in the chest. Upon impact, the wood detonated, shattering target into a shower of flying splinters and smoking debris.
A loud round of applause and cheers erupted from the D.A. members as Angelina turned back to the crowd, offering a proud, sweeping bow.
"That is a seventh-year manifestation of the spell," Lucifer said, reclaiming his spot at the front of the room. "And we will not be practicing this curse in our regular sessions... If someone were to accidentally miss the target, the ricochet would be dangerous to everyone. However, it is important you learn to recognize specific orange light of incantation, because your enemies will know it. Now, you all just saw how powerful Johnson's spell was. Allow me to show you my own attempt."
He raised his wand, doing a weird, intricate wave through the air, a complex pattern of geometry that no one in room could understand or replicate. He turned toward standing mannequin and pointed the tip directly at its center.
"Confringo," he whispered.
The difference was instantaneous. Instead of a loud shout, his quiet whisper unleashed a blinding, roaring orange glow that saturated the entire tip of his wand before rocketing forward. The jet of magic traveled so fast it left a physical trench of heat in the air.
When the spell collided with target, results were catastrophic. The mannequin completely disintegrated. The kinetic force caused the stone blocks of the floor beneath it to explode violently, sending jagged chunks of rock and sharp wooden shards flying like shrapnel directly toward the panicked crowd.
The students shrieked, scrambling over one another to duck as the debris rained down on them. But right before a fragment of flying stone could touch them, the debris struck an invisible, solid wall of force. The shrapnel bounced harmlessly off Lucifer's passive shield, clattering loudly onto the floor in a smoking heap.
Lucifer turned back around to face the trembling students, casually spreading his arms wide. "That wasn't even a single percent of what powered 'Blasting Curse' looks like from me. This entire room would have collapsed had I used a 'full' number for the incantation."
He looked at their faces, expecting to see the pathetic terror that mortals usually displayed. Instead, his eyes met an overwhelming wave of admiration and awe from a vast majority of the crowd. Padma Patil and Katie Bell both stared at him with wide, glassy eyes that looked as though they had literal hearts swimming in their pupils, which didn't surprise cynical nature at all.
Hermione, however, was the only one who looked at him with an expression of compassion and understanding. She took a step forward, her voice carrying clearly through the ringing silence of the chamber.
"Voldemort," She said clearly. The casual usage of the name caused numerous jarring motions and fearful flinches throughout the crowd, but she ignored them, keeping her eyes onto Lucifer. "He stands no chance of survival with Lucifer on our side."
"Nor any of his pathetic Death Eaters," Luna Lovegood added with a serene smile.
"Now, for our actual revisions," Lucifer announced, turning his wand back toward Zacharias Smith and flicking it once to restore the boy's mouth to his face. "Spread out across the mats. First, we will give the 'Disarming Charm' a few goes to warm up your wrists, and then we will progress from there."
For the next two hours, the hidden room was filled with echoing sounds of defensive spells being recited in unison. Wands flashed continuously through the torch-light, and except for a few minor posture issues from the third years, everyone performed well under the pressure. Soon enough, meeting concluded, and the members began filtering out into corridors in small, quiet groups until Lucifer and Hermione became the only two left in the 'Room of Requirement.'
She walked over to his side, fingers lightly brushing against his arm as she looked down at the shattered granite. "That was a fantastic idea, Lucifer... having everyone go over the basic spells. Everyone has a chance of passing their upcoming O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s if they keep performing this well under your instruction."
"Thanks, Hermione. I'm really glad I decided to hold the meeting as well," Lucifer said as they walked out into the corridor, fingers tightly laced together. "I wonder how Harry's lesson in 'Occlumency' went..."
"I hope well, but he was with Snape..." Hermione trailed off, her brow furrowing. As much as she tried to remain objective, Snape was a deeply bitter man. Any extra time spent under his supervision outside of normal classes was bound to be stressful.
When they entered the Gryffindor common room, space was far from empty. The flickering firelight illuminated a crowded room; several fifth and sixth-year boys were still awake, hunched over late-night chess boards, alongside a scattering of younger students finishing left-over charms essays. Near the hearth, Harry and Ron sat close together, their voices lowered in an intense conversation.
As Lucifer and Hermione approached, the slump of Harry's shoulders made it entirely obvious that something was wrong with Potter again.
"What's wrong now?" Lucifer asked, lowering himself into a plush armchair. Hermione slid into the space right beside him, their shoulders pressing together.
Harry looked up, his green eyes bloodshot, and quietly recounted the details of the vision he had just shared with Ron.
"So that specific object Voldemort is looking to recover... you reckon it's hidden inside the 'Ministry of Magic?" Hermione asked, leaning forward to ensure she had heard the details correctly.
"Yeah, it has to be somewhere in the 'Department of Mysteries," Harry said, his fingers instinctively rubbing his lightning scar as if mentally clearing the residual haze of the vision. "When Mr Weasley was taking me down to my disciplinary hearing last August, we passed that black door. It's the same corridor I keep seeing in my sleep... It was definitely the same Arthur was guarding when that snake attacked him."
"That must be the same entrance Sturgis Podmore was trying to break into when the Ministry guards arrested him," Hermione noted, her mind immediately cataloguing the recent events. 'It's far too much of a coincidence. I wonder if poor Sturgis was operating under the 'Imperius Curse.'
"How come Sturgis was trying to break in when he's supposed to be on our side?" Ron asked, looking thoroughly bewildered.
"The 'Department of Mysteries' is aptly named, because only select individuals are ever permitted to cross it," Lucifer answered, his palm tracing soothing, slow circles on Hermione's left thigh.
"How do you know that?" Harry asked, his tone dropping into a demanding.
Lucifer paused, looking at the boy without a word. He chose not to openly utter the names of Nicolas Flamel or Gellert Grindelwald, the two figures who had explicitly broken down that sector for him during their past, he had been curious after Evelyn first mentioned the 'Unspeakables' who conducted classified research within those hidden chambers.
He knew geography of the Department. The Time Room, used to study temporal manipulation and construct complex magical artifacts like 'Time-Turners'. The Death Chamber, centered around an ancient, whispering stone archway known as the Veil, which Lucifer mused to be a direct gateway bridge to the afterlife. The Love Chamber, which contained a large, glowing fountain of pure 'Amortentia' to study the most powerful, untamable force in existence, a room kept permanently locked by the Ministry.
The 'Hall of Prophecies,' acting as custodians for thousands of glass orbs recording fates spoken by Seers. The Space Room, built to observe and simulate cosmic forces, gravity, and the physical planets. And the Brain Room, which analyzed human thought and memory by keeping tentacled brains swimming in tanks of glowing green solution.
'At least, that is how the Unspeakables arranged it in previous timeline,' Lucifer thought to himself. 'I have no idea if Ministry has altered the floor plan in this one...' After a few seconds of silence, he simply shrugged. "Ask the Creator."
Hermione looked at Lucifer carefully, her eyes narrowing slightly. Having spent years analyzing his habits, she knew why he possessed such knowledge regarding the 'Department of Mysteries.'
Harry didn't appreciate the cryptic response, his jaw clenching. "So what is kept inside Department of Mysteries?"
"Well, the people who work down there are called Unspeakables," Ron interjected, shifting his weight. "But that's mostly because no one seems to know what they actually do behind those doors. Seems like a weird place to hide a weapon..."
"It's not weird at all," Hermione countered, piggybacking on the theory as her curiosity flared. She made a silent mental note to extract real answers from Lucifer the moment they were alone, well aware he usually withheld information under the excuse of her safety. "It makes perfect sense. It will be something top-secret that Ministry has been developing in isolation, I expect." She paused, studying Harry's face. "Are you sure you're alright?"
Harry quickly rubbed both of his hands over his forehead, pressing hard as if trying to iron out a crease in skull. "Yeah... fine..." he muttered, lowering his hands. His fingers were noticeably trembling against robes. "I just feel a bit... I don't particularly like 'Occlumency' much."
Hermione remembered her own grueling experience learning the art from Lucifer back in their second year. His magic had peeled back her thoughts, viewing her memories from the moment of her birth.
He had seen... everything. That continuous mental proximity had forged an intense bond, making her feel as though she had known him for lifetimes. Wanting to shift the heavy atmosphere, she turned back to Lucifer. "So, do you want to go ahead and start on Umbridge's defense homework?"
"I've already finished it," Lucifer said nonchalantly, reaching into his robes to pull out his leather-bound sketchbook.
"Already finished? What? How is that even possible?!" Hermione nearly shouted, her voice cutting through the common room chatter.
Lucifer calmly produced completed parchment roll for Umbridge's class. "I did it in an hour after our afternoon classes ended for the day."
She stared at the ink-covered scroll, looking as though she had just been slapped across the face. "And where on earth was I when you did this?"
"Sitting right across from me at our usual table in the library," Lucifer said, a small smirk playing on his lips. "You were working on that essay for 'History of Magic.' Which I already finished too, by the way."
"Okay... is there an assignment you 'didn't' complete today?" She asked, her voice tight with bewilderment.
"Uhhh... no. I got History of Magic done during lunch, remember?" Lucifer noted. Hermione gave a stiff nod. "I finished both Snape's potions essay and Vector's arithmancy proof during our double 'Defense Against the Dark Arts' class, and I already told you when I finished our defense reading."
Hermione sat there, entirely amazed and speechless. Lucifer willfully pulled out each of the completed assignments from his bag, and every single scroll was done far beyond the standard guidelines required by the professors. It was their fifth year, their O.W.L. year, and Lucifer was blasting through the curriculum as if it were a minor inconvenience rather than a turning point for their futures!'
It made Hermione briefly question if she was an idiot. Her mind flashed back to their first year, remembering her twelve-year-old self getting ready to explode when Lucifer had bluntly told Professor McGonagall that her robes smelled bad. 'If I'm an idiot for falling behind his pace, what in Merlin's name... are Neville, Harry and Ron doing?' she thought. They were still getting regularly blasted by the staff for either arriving late to 'Transfiguration' or failing to turn a teacup into a pocket watch. How were they even allowed to remain at Hogwarts?
Lucifer had stated to her several times that he deeply missed the 'first and second-year' version of Hermione Granger, talking about her past self as if she were a completely different person. It had actually made the older girl feel a strange pang of jealousy toward her younger self, constantly hearing him describe how cute, soft, and cuddly she used to be before the stress of the "Harry Potter" took over.
"How do you possibly have the time for all of that?" Ron asked, voicing the exact question Hermione was brooding over.
"I don't really think about the workload," Lucifer said, shrugging his shoulders as he flipped open his sketchbook. "I just do it, and before I even realize it, I'm completely done with everything." The downplay came out sounding intensely smug.
"Fine, don't tell us your secrets then," Ron grumbled, pulling a blank roll of parchment toward his inkwell to start his own defense paper.
Harry stood up abruptly, gathering his scattered books with hurried movements. He looked overwhelmed, as if he needed to leave the room before his eyes started crying blood from the stress. "I'm going up to bed... I can't concentrate on a single line. It gives me despair just seeing the length of his parchment scrolls."
Snape's brutal teaching method involved using 'Legilimency' to invade the boy's mind, forcing Harry to practice resisting the internal intrusion repeatedly until his mental energy was spent.
Luna Lovegood, whom Harry had run into near the entrance hall earlier, had mentioned that method was effective, but carried a significant risk: if the student managed even a brief, subconscious moment of successful 'Occlumency,' Legilimency spell could backfire, allowing the defender to see straight into caster's thoughts.
It all made perfect sense now. No wonder Snape had been so utterly furious after their very first session in the dungeon. Harry had accidentally deflected the intrusion, catching a fleeting glimpse of something deeply personal hidden within Snape's private thoughts.
Even that brief look had been enough to infuriate the professor.
Harry privately thought to himself that Luna was proving to be significantly more intelligent than Hermione Granger, but he kept those dangerous words hidden within his mind, well aware he would be hexed right there if he said it aloud.
"Okay, Harry. I hope you feel better soon," Hermione said kindly as he walked off toward the spiral stairs, though he didn't offer a response back. She turned to Lucifer, letting out a sharp huff of irritation. "Seriously, I want to know how you finished your homework so quickly."
"Hermione... I honestly don't know," Lucifer said, his eyes dropping to the blank page of his book as his cheeks burned with a rare, slight flush.
"I hate to sound this way, but I genuinely want to open your brain up just to see how it work," She said with an air of pure, scientific curiosity.
"If it were you wielding the scalpel... I don't think I'd mind at all," Lucifer winked cheekily, flashing her a smile.
"Oh, for the love of---" Ron started to complain, rolling his eyes at the display. But his voice was instantly cut off as a loud, manic burst of hysterical laughter echoed down from the boys' dormitories. Lucifer and Ron were on their feet in a heartbeat, bolting up the spiral stone stairs.
They threw dormitory door open to find Harry collapsed flat on floor, laughing uncontrollably while clutching his chest.
"Harry! HARRY!" Ron shouted, kneeling down on the floor beside his friend.
In the fraction of a second that followed, a flash of silver light zipped past Ron's shoulder, hitting the green eyed boy square in the chest. Lucifer stood in the doorway with his wand extended, having cast a mild 'Stunning Spell' to instantly halt the boy's hysterical fit. Harry's spastic motions ceased immediately, and he lay still, panting for air.
"What the fuck just happened up here?" Lucifer asked, lowering his wand as the magic dissipated.
"I... I dunno..." Harry gasped out, chest heaving as Ron helped him hoist his upper body into a sitting position. "He's... he's really happy, Lucifer. I mean ecstatic."
"You mean Voldemort, right?" Lucifer asked quietly, his eyes narrowing.
"Something good happened," Harry mumbled, his entire body shaking badly. Lucifer noted the tremor was identical to the physical shock he had displayed the night Arthur Weasley had been attacked by the serpent. "Something he's been hoping would happen for months..."
"It makes sense, though," Lucifer told him, stepping into the room. "After Snape's assaults on your thoughts today, your barriers are open. Voldemort being able to easily slip past your guard isn't surprising. But if you keep practicing the Occlumency exercises, you'll be able to stop these intrusions soon." He held out a hand, helping Harry up from down.
Together, he and Ron led their friend to his four-poster bed so he could rest against the sheets.
Leaving Harry to recover, Lucifer turned to head back down to the common room, though Ron obviously chose to stay behind in the dorm.
Hermione was still sitting where they had left her, brown eyes fixed anxiously on the stone staircase. "Is he okay, Lucifer? I don't even know how many times I've repeatedly asked that question over past few years..."
Sitting down beside her on the sofa, he looked at her profile. "Harry said Voldemort was happy about something," he whispered softly, keeping voice from carrying across the room. "Something he has been hoping to achieve for a very long time."
"I wish he's able to stop those visions soon..." She said quietly, her fingers gently stroking Crookshanks. The ginger cat was letting out a series of low, rumbling noises that Hermione's internal intuition now understood to be a sign of animal worry.
"I do too... but ultimately, that choice is up to him," Lucifer said. He opened his sketchbook to a fresh, empty page, charcoal pencil poised above the paper.
Hermione suddenly stood up from the cushions, her movements a bit hurried. "I think I'm, er, going to go ahead to bed now, Lucifer."
Lucifer looked up from his book, his expression softening. "Okay," he said, standing up alongside her. "Good night, pet."
He leaned forward, pressing his lips to hers for a quick, definitive two-second kiss, but the contact was more than enough for both of them. The displays of affection drew a series of sharp, audible gasps and giggles from a cluster of third-year Gryffindor girls sitting near the window.
"Good night," Hermione whispered, her face turning a shade of red under the scrutiny. She walked quickly up the stairs and entered the girls' dormitory, finding her roommates still awake.
Parvati Patil offered her a polite wave from her trunk, but Lavender Brown, keeping up the freezing behavior she had displayed all year, completely pretended as though Hermione didn't exist at all.
Hermione sat down on the edge of her mattress, drawing her curtains closed as her thoughts drifted back to the common room. 'His sketchbook...' she thought, a soft smile breaking across her face. 'I feel slightly guilty for looking through the pages when he left it open, but they're all... every one of them is a sketch of me. He's drawn me in dozens of different poses from our classes. He started off a little shaky with the proportions in our first year, but his technique has progressed... I had no idea he had committed my everyday movements to his memory just for sketching...'
A sudden wave of warmth flooded her chest, and her eyes began to tear up against the pillow. 'I think I'm going to cry my eyes out from how romantic that is... I love him just so much.'
Hermione smiled happily as she laid down beneath the covers, staring up at the dark velvet canopy above her bed. She placed both of her hands against her chest, desperately trying to calm the joyous beating of her heart as she drifted off to sleep.
