Kreacher had started calling Lucifer 'Master', bowing so low that his long, bat-like ears dragged across the grimy floorboards of the hallway. The old house-elf was always popping up from the shadows, croaking in a desperate, eager voice to ask what the young wizard needed or what could be done for his comfort.
Lucifer treated Kreacher calmly, with matter-of-fact respect he showed Tipsy, his own house-elf who was currently helping manage the luxury back at the Lux penthouse.
"Stop calling him Master!" Hermione snapped, fuming inside whenever she witnessed the groveling. Her fingers tightened around her book, but she couldn't do anything to legally alter the old elf's instincts, much to her internal frustration.
Lucifer also noticed Sirius Black’s mood was deteriorating. On the day they had arrived from London, Harry’s godfather had been exceptionally cheerful and happy to have a full house.
But the closer the calendar ticked to date they went back to Hogwarts, the more Sirius seemed to be prone to what Molly Weasley called 'fits of the sullen.' He would become taciturn, brooding, and grumpy, often withdrawing straight to Buckbeak's upstairs room for hours at a time to escape the kitchen noise.
If not for Hippogriff being a male, Lucifer would have started to expect Black popping out Hybrids babies soon to continue the 'family' line, still he wondered if he should warn Amelia Bones just in case.
Harry couldn't understand why Sirius would act this way while his friends were still inside the house, but Lucifer had easily figured out the root cause.
It was the crushing fact that teenagers had to go back to Hogwarts, leaving Black completely isolated and alone again with Kreacher, who had, strangely enough, been obeying orders far more docilely than he had over the summer months.
Lucifer had caught a glimpse of what the old house-elf was doing when he wasn't following commands or bowing to him; Kreacher had been secretly hoarding discarded items from the trash sacks, carrying them down to his little nest in the boiler room. Sirius referred to those silver lockets and rings as useless 'Relics of the Black Family'
He kept shouting that the junk was eventually going to be tossed into the bin, but Lucifer quietly figured if the man hadn't gotten around to emptying the cabinets yet, he never would.
It was on the very last day of the winter holiday break. The four fifth-years, plus Ginny, Crookshanks, and Rowena, were all packed tightly into Harry and Ron's bedroom.
They were quietly watching Potter play a high stakes match of Wizard's Chess against Lucifer, who was the current reigning, undefeated champion ever since he had utterly obliterated Ron's defense a couple of school years back.
Suddenly, Molly Weasley poked her head through the cracked bedroom door, her face tight as she addressed the raven-haired boy, "Harry, dear, could you please come to basement kitchen? Professor Snape is waiting downstairs and would like an urgent word with you.”
It was currently Lucifer's move, but his verbal declaration never formed after Molly finished speaking. He turned his eyes toward her outline, "What would Snape want with him on a holiday?"
"Professor Snape stated it was only for Harry to know," Molly said reprovingly, her mouth thinning into a hard line as she clearly didn't appreciate the casual, arrogant dismissal in his voice for the Potions master. She turned her face back to Harry, tone urgent, "Now come on, quickly, dear. He says he cannot stay long at headquarters.”
"Be careful down there, Harry," Hermione said when Molly withdrew her head from the door, voice filled with lingering worry.
Harry gave a tense nod, slowly standing up from his chair. He walked just as slowly out of the bedroom into the corridor; his board was getting obliterated by Lucifer's knights anyway, and Ron seemed to be enjoying the cursed, causing him to wonder for tenth time over years whether Sorting Hat should have just sent his arse to Hufflepuff instead.
The door clicked shut, leaving the room quiet. "What could Snape possibly want with him?" Hermione asked, her brow furrowing as she looked at her boyfriend, "You don't think Harry's done something wrong, do you?"
"No, I doubt that, Granger," Lucifer said slowly, his eyes shifting to look at his girlfriend, who was currently getting scowled at by his miniature ivory Chess Queen. Hermione fervently glared right back at the tiny stone piece with an even greater intensity, “The visit probably has to do with that graphic vision Harry saw, the attack Voldemort intentionally showed his scar.”
The mere mention of the Dark Lord's name caused both Ron and Ginny to shudder horribly against their cushions.
"Wait... do you mean--?" Hermione stopped her tongue mid-sentence, her jaw dropping as she became unsure if she was actually correct in her sudden guess.
"Yeah... Snape is coming here on Dumbledore's orders to force Harry to learn 'Occlumency," Lucifer said, his tone turning ice-cold as he crossed his arms. "Which makes him the worst, most volatile person to teach Harry anything, given how much hatred Snape harbors for him, and how callously cruel that greasy-haired bastard is by nature... Harry will be lucky to even study basics of protecting surface. The process will be similar to having his brain raped.”
"Well... you are a natural Occlumens, right, Lucifer?" Ginny asked him, nose wrinkling in disgust at the horrifying scene she had just dreamed of Snape violating the 'Boy Who Lived's thoughts in bed.
"Yeah, but---" Lucifer started.
Hermione interrupted, raising her hand straight upward into the air as if she were sitting inside a regular classroom. "But nothing, Lucifer! You would be better, more patient teacher than Snape could ever hope to be for Harry's sanity," She said with fierce confidence, ’You should go straight to Dumbledore when we get back from the break and demand Harry learn from you instead.”
“No, I can't handle one-on-one private teaching sessions with him... that is the reason I was so adamant about D.A. when you first brought up the idea of training a group," Lucifer said, his voice getting a bit heated as his jaw clenched, "It is one thing to see a massive crowd of people messing up their wand arcs; I can easily divide my frustration evenly among all thirty-five of them. But to just be centered on one thick-skulled person? You saw.... firsthand how brutal my temper was toward him last school year when I tried to help prepare for the final maze task, right?”
Hermione opened her mouth to protest the logic, but she couldn't find a fact to deny that he was right; he hadn't even helped Harry much beyond the very first afternoon before giving up in annoyance.
Suddenly, a sharp echoing voice cut straight from the lower levels. The sound was faint through the walls, but it was definitively terrifying sound of Harry screaming at the top of his lungs for his godfather. "Sirius!"
The four teenagers inside bedroom scrambled to their feet, instantly hurrying out of the door and sprinting down the dark staircases toward the basement kitchen. Just before their boots could even reach the oak door, Harry’s voice yelled out again in a panicked desperation, "NO! Sirius, don't do it—!"
Lucifer forcefully slammed the kitchen door open first, his broad shoulders squared as he prepared to telekinetically restrain and defuse whatever violent situation had arisen between the adults. What his eyes registered inside was a lethal standoff-----
Sirius Black and Severus Snape were currently standing face-to-face, both of their wands drawn and aimed directly at each other's throats. In truth, Lucifer didn't care if Black went ahead and murdered the man.
Snape's corrupted soul would eventually report straight to his caverns in Hell anyway unless the bastard did something majorly good in his currently pathetic life.
Hermione stood slightly behind his right arm, her eyes wide with horror as she watched the clash. Just then, the hallway door behind their backs swung open to reveal Fred, George, Molly, and, to everyone's surprise, Arthur Weasley himself stepping into the house.
The older children had visited his ward a couple of days prior, and skin had seemed okay, but the Healers hadn't yet officially signed his release forms from St. Mungo's.
Now, the patriarch was standing right there in the hall, his face beaming with all smiles. "Cured!" he announced brightly to the kitchen at large, his arms gesturing grandly, "Cured under the witches law!"
His large, triumphant smile withered away to nothing when he saw the silent standoff before, "Merlin's beard... what is going on inside this kitchen?"
Snape and Sirius both slowly, rigidly lowered their wands to their sides, though both adults continued to glare straight into each other's eyes with an utmost, burning contempt that had been simmering for twenty years.
It was glaringly clear that the sudden, arrival of more mature adults was the single factor enough to bring tempers back to their baseline senses.
Pocketing his wand with a sharp flick of his wrist, Snape swept back across the stone floorboards. His black cloak billowed behind his boots as he marched past the Weasleys, past Hermione, and right past Lucifer's towering frame, who was staring down at his face with a predatory, ice cold detachment. The Potions master didn't offer a word of comment to the couple.
But when his hand touched the heavy door handle to exit the house, he spun around, his eyes scrutinizing onto Harry's pale face, "Six o'clock sharp, Monday evening, Potter. Do not be late in my office.”
With that command, his shadow vanished down the lane, and front door slammed shut. Sirius continued to glare fiercely at empty place, wand still clutched tightly as his arm hung limply at his side, chest heaving.
Arthur cleared his throat nervously, his eyes scanning quiet room. "But... what has been going on between you two?"
"Nothing, Arthur," Sirius said quickly, his voice raspy as though he had just run a long distance in the frost, "Just a friendly little chat between two old school friends..." he lied through his teeth. But the visceral way he and Snape had just behaved proved there was hatred between them, and it was never going away in this lifetime.
Sirius forced his features to smooth, looking at the patriarch's coat, "So... you're cured, Arthur? That is spectacular news, really great...”
"Yes, isn't it wonderful?" Molly said with faux cheeriness, desperately trying to ease the tension as she led her husband forward by the arm to rest in nearest wooden chair, "Healer Smethwyck worked in the end, thank goodness. Found an antidote to whatever Magical toxin that snake has got inside its fangs... And Arthur has learned his lesson about foolishly dabbling in Muggle stitches and medicine, haven't you, dear?" she added, her tone turning rather menacing at the final syllable.
"Yes, Molly, dear," Arthur said meekly, shrinking slightly into his cardigan.
Lucifer's eyes calmly noticed the behaviors of all the adults in room. He noted the shifts: Molly was acting significantly more dominant and controlling than usual over the family; Arthur was more passive and submissive to his wife's sharp words; and Sirius was visibly forcing his mind to appear happy for Arthur's recovery, but the second he thought no one stared, his handsome face reverted straight back into a moody, dark, and brooding expression.
Every one of them seemed different from who they had been over the past two years, and Lucifer couldn't blame their biology for the decay.
He himself was altered even from his status last year, ever since he had stepped out of Aberforth’s Hog's Head pub and got shifted into the lines of this brand new, altered timeline.

After the celebratory dinner concluded that evening, Lucifer was sitting quietly alone in his designated bedroom, lounging back on his mattress as he watched Rowena.
The owl was contentedly tearing into a large rat she had hunted from the dark corners of the pantry.
His registry of using Wizarding magic outside of school walls had been returned by Amelia Bones's signature. He felt satisfaction knowing he would no longer have to manually waste his time casting 'Confundus' charms on the security of his wand’s trace just to clear his tracks.
But a persistent, nagging feeling in the back of his mind refused to shake loose as he stared out at London sky. Dolores Umbridge would now harbor a personal vendetta against him after he had humiliated her right in front of the Wizengamot court.
She would probably stop at nothing to make his daily life a living hell once they crossed back through Hogwarts gates.
Lucifer Morningstar was more than ready for her petty traps. He wouldn't offer her satisfaction of reckless provocation, but he would quietly bide his time, strike her down when the moment was right.

The following day they were heading back to Hogwarts, but only Lucifer and Hermione seemed remotely happy about the departure.
Harry spent the morning dreading his upcoming 'Occlumency' lessons with Snape; Lucifer had even joked over breakfast that it would have been easier on boy's mental if flesh-tearing Wampus Cat were teaching Potter defense instead.
Harry Potter had actually started admiring Hermione's determination up to this point in their academic career. She was, without a doubt, one of the most tenacious people he had ever encountered, and her history proved it.
She had managed to juggle twelve individual subjects during their third year, including utilizing a restricted 'Time-Turner' just to attend completely overlapping classes.
Few students in centuries long history of Hogwarts could ever hope to match her persistence, and here he was, whining like a child about a few evening hours with Snape.
Anyway, transit required them to take the Knight Bus back to school grounds that morning, and Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks were assigned to act as Harry's specialized guard escort, even though Lupin openly agreed during their briefing that both were functioning as little more than civilian adults tagging along for ride.
Both Order members were down in dim basement kitchen eating a hurried breakfast when the four fifth-years walked into room the next morning.
When the door was opened, whatever tactic Remus was sharing in hushed, serious whispers with Tonks was dropped completely out of the air.
After their hurried breakfast concluded, they all pulled on their winter jackets and wool scarves against the freezing chilly gray January morning.
Lucifer and Hermione had stepped out onto the frosty front stone steps ahead of the others as Sirius Black held Harry back inside for a brief, godfather's moment. He turned toward the bushy-haired girl, a soft gentleness breaking through.
Hermione didn't even have time to pick up on what specific advance he was waiting before his lips found her own in the freezing air, intensity warming her numbed body up a bit.
“Woah...." She whispered with a brilliant smile after they separated, her chocolate eyes shining.
Behind her back, Ron Weasley hurried past both of them as quickly as his boots could carry him, his jaw tensed in irritation, just as Harry came marching out of the house with Lupin and Tonks in close tow.
"Come on then, look sharp," Lupin said in a rushed, low voice, his eyes scanning the empty street. "The sooner we get safely on bus, better for our security.” He held his wand up cleanly into gray sky, and in less than a second, the vehicle materialized out of thin air, opening its brass doors to welcome their luggage aboard.
It was a preposterous triple-decker bus colored a vibrant midnight purple, and as always, the vehicle stopped dead on a perfect dime against the pavement. Stan Shunpike appeared at entrance, straightening his uniform. "Welcome to the—"
"Yes, yes, we know the script, thank you, Stan!" Tonks said hurriedly, cutting off his speech as she practically threw Harry's weight straight onto the bus to clear the street.
Lucifer was the last one to board the vehicle, his strides unbothered as Stan was busy trying to excitedly say hello to Harry. Tonks immediately stepped into the conductor's space, her eyes narrowing as she began to threaten him in a low hiss: "If you shout his name one more time in this public lane, Shunpike, I will personally curse your mind into oblivion!"
"Blimey, I've always wanted to go for a ride on this thing," Ron said, his previous sour bedroom mood seemingly evaporating as he stared up at the ceiling.
"Eh, it's not really all it's cracked up to be, Weasley," Lucifer said dismissively of the vehicle's erratic mechanics, finding a seat, "Good for getting somewhere fast in Britain if you can't 'Apparate,' I suppose," he let out a sigh, quietly wondering to himself why he hadn't just used his reinstated Adult Wizard status to Apparate the group straight onto Platform 9 ¾ quarters.
Although, to be honest, he didn't actually know if the Ministry's wards allowed you to 'Apparate' directly onto the platform; he'd have to try that experiment one day just to see if it was possible.
