Chapter 38. Gluttony
Succubi Chapter 38. Gluttony
I walked through the wide double doors of the academy’s cafeteria, pretending I didn’t just have a high-stakes boss fight in a magically concealed dimension behind the boy’s restroom. Totally normal student behavior. Move along, nothing to see here.
The scent of fried food, fresh bread, and fruity drinks hit me like a wall. Students were scattered across the long rows of tables, most of them chatting, laughing, or passed out from exhaustion. It had the energy of a post-battle cooldown zone. Everyone was here to refuel, recharge, and pretend the first day hadn’t already tried to kill them.
I scanned the room for Evelyn or Leon—half-expecting to see Leon fighting a sandwich and losing—but no luck. Just a bunch of students and a few instructors enjoying their break. Maybe they were still on their way or already done.
My eyes landed on a smoothie stall tucked near the back. The sign hanging above it was cheesy as hell—“Smoothie Spellz!”—complete with sparkles and animated fruit floating around it. Of course.
I walked over, gave the vendor a little nod. “Uh… Evan Drakos. Elise said she covered one for me?”
The vendor, a fourth-year with the dead eyes of someone who’d worked too many food shifts, checked the list. “Yep. Instructor Elise prepaid. One Arcane Boost Blend. Try not to explode.”
“Reassuring,” I muttered, grabbing the cup he handed over.
It was huge. Like, comically oversized. The kind of smoothie that needed two hands and came with a straw big enough to double as a blow dart tube. It was a weird mix of purple and green, swirling together like it wasn’t entirely sure what fruit it wanted to be.
I took a sip.
Sweet. Tangy. With a faint aftertaste of… lightning?
Weird. But good.
I turned to keep searching for Evelyn, but then—I felt it.
You know that feeling when someone’s staring at you like you just dropped a pile of gold in front of them?
That. But extra.
I looked up just in time to see her.
Gladia.
Baguette in hand.
Not a slice. Not a sandwich.
An entire, full-length baguette.
Half-eaten.
Still warm, probably.
And the bite marks were bold. Like she’d been going at it like it was the most normal thing in the world.
Her eyes locked onto me, and I swear I saw a sparkle flash across her irises like a sniper finding her mark.
She beelined straight toward me.
“Evan!” she called out cheerfully, weaving through tables with the grace of a predator that just spotted her favorite snack.
I had about three seconds to prepare myself.
Innocent grin. Sharp aura. Gladia looked like the lovechild of a romcom heroine and a low-key horror movie.
“Uh, yes?” I said, adjusting my grip on the smoothie like it might shield me.
She stopped directly in front of me, tilting her head like a curious cat. “Is that the new flavor smoothie?”
“…New flavor?” I blinked, then glanced down at the purple-green swirl in my cup. Oh yeah. The sign did say something earlier.
I glanced at the stall again. Yup. Bold letters.
“NEW! Arcane Boost: Grape-Kiwi-Thunderberry Blend!”
“I guess?” I said, still not entirely sure if Thunderberry was a real thing or a marketing gimmick. “Instructor Elise gave it to me.”
“Lucky you,” she said sweetly.
Before I could respond, she leaned in and clamped her lips around the straw.
I froze.
She didn’t take much—just a quick sip—but the confidence in her movement made it feel like she owned both the drink and my social life now.
She pulled back and licked her lips.
“Oh! That’s delicious,” she said, her smile widening.
My brain was still buffering.
Then she raised her half-eaten baguette. “Want some?”
I stared at it.
It was… majestic, in its own terrifying way. A whole baguette. Carried and gnawed on like a portable snack. Like a demon version of a granola bar.
“Uh…”
I don’t hate baguettes.
But this?
This was the kind of bread I needed two hands to wield. There were actual teeth marks. She had been carving her way through it, not slicing.
But she looked so damn happy, I couldn’t say no.
“…Sure.”
She tore off a chunk—clean, neat, and still a little warm—and handed it to me.
I bit it.
Crunchy on the outside. Soft inside. Buttery. Actually? Not bad.
“You always carry around baguettes like this?” I asked through a mouthful.
“Not always,” she said. “Just when I’m feeling fancy.”
“…This is fancy?”
She nodded solemnly and took another huge bite from her end.
I swallowed. “Do you even chew or just absorb it through some kind of osmosis?”
“I’m a succubus, but my main sin affinity is Gluttony,” she said matter-of-factly. “I absorb energy and food.”
Gladia took another unapologetically massive bite of her baguette, crunching into it like it personally offended her. Bits of crust crumbled down her clothes, and she didn’t even flinch. Just casually brushed them off like a pro.
I looked around quickly—just to make sure we weren’t being watched. No students were too close, the nearest table was full of pixie twins arguing over potion compatibility, and, more importantly, no Leon.
I leaned in slightly, lowering my voice. “Wait, so… your sin affinity is Gluttony?”
She nodded, still chewing. “Mhm.”
“I thought all succubi were Lust-based.”
She blinked, then snorted. “Nope. That’s a common stereotype.”
“Huh. So what, you guys just… get assigned a sin at birth?”
“It’s more complicated than that.” She swallowed her bite and waved her half-eaten bread for emphasis like it was a wand of truth. “Each demon is born with two classifications. First, our Class—like succubus, gremlin, imp, hellhound, that sort of thing. That determines our base race and biological traits.”
“Makes sense.”
“Then comes our Sin Affinity. That’s what aligns with one of the Seven Sins and dictates our base magic, instincts, and behavior patterns.”
“And you got Gluttony.”
She looked proud. “Best one, in my opinion. Food and energy. Win-win.”
I let that settle in for a second, then squinted. “So what about the others?”
She counted off on her fingers.
“Rivy is Wrath. Val’s Greed. Sera’s Sloth. Evelyn is Envy.”
“Wait, seriously?” I paused. “Evelyn’s Envy?”
“Yup.”
“She's the least envious person I’ve ever met.”
Gladia smirked. “Exactly. She channels it into ambition, not pettiness. Sin affinity isn’t about being evil—it’s a natural mana resonance.”
I leaned back a bit, sipping from my smoothie as I mentally ran through them all.
“…And Lilith?”
“Lust, obviously,” she said without hesitation, smiling with that faint mischief that always tagged along when someone mentioned Lilith.
I blinked as way too vivid memories of last night played across my brain like a very private 4D movie.
“Yeah…” I coughed. “I can understand that.”
“She’s more... sassy than the others because Lust enhances emotional sensitivity,” Gladia added, completely unfazed.
Of course it does.
I nodded along and tried to move on before I started glowing red from flashbacks. “So… what about Pride?”
Her expression shifted slightly.
“Pride,” she said more softly, “is reserved for royal demons. The king’s bloodline.”
My brows raised. “Like… royalty royalty?”
Gladia nodded. “Not even a normal demon lord can access Pride as a sin affinity. It’s unique to the direct lineage. The elite few.”
“I see.” I grew quiet, sipping my smoothie while trying to casually suppress the part of me screaming ‘you're that guy, Evan. You’re the drama.’
She didn’t say anything else for a beat.
Then, suddenly, she reached out and dusted my shoulder off like an older sister checking if I’d rolled in dirt.
“You look a bit messy,” she said, brows furrowing. “Was your training that bad?”
I hesitated.
She noticed. “Evan?”
“I’m fine,” I said automatically.
She stared.
I sighed, looked down at the floor for a second, then back at her.
“I fought a half-demon just now.”
She froze. Her baguette stopped halfway to her mouth.
“What?”
I nodded, voice lower. “He trapped me inside some kind of underworld pocket space—right in the restroom.”
“Did you…” She leaned forward. “Did you kill him?”
“Yeah.”
Her shoulders dropped like she’d been holding her breath.
“I thought so,” she said. “That’s why you looked weird when I saw you. You had that… post-fight gloom.”
“More like post-fight confusion,” I muttered. “But yeah. He tried to kill me. Said the king wanted anyone who escaped dead.”
Gladia’s face turned serious. “Then it’s started.”
I blinked. “Started?”
“They’re searching. More actively. It means they’ve gotten closer to discovering the missing link.”
I stared at my smoothie, watching the straw swirl around in the green-purple abyss.
“Well, the good news is…” I said, tone dry, “he didn’t know I’m the lost prince of hell, or whatever title I apparently come with.”
“You’re sure?”
I nodded. “He didn’t mention royalty. Just kept calling me an escaped demon like I broke out of jail or something.”
“That’s good,” she said, though her expression didn’t relax. “For now. If they ever figure out who you really are…”
“I know.” I sipped. “Game over.”
She tore off another bite of her baguette, but this time she didn’t chew right away. She just let it rest in her cheek as she stared across the cafeteria.
“…You did the right thing,” she finally said.
I looked up.
“I mean it,” she said. “Killing him. If he reported back, the king wouldn’t just send more hunters. He’d send war generals. You’d be dead before your next smoothie.”
“Dramatic,” I muttered. “But fair.”
She smirked. “And I don’t want you dead. Who else would finish my baguettes?”
“Oh, right, I’m your food disposal system now?”
She nudged her bread toward me again. “Want more?”
I stared at it.
It was warm. A little squished. Possibly double-demon-bite touched.
But who cares? So yeah. I took another bite.
“…Still crunchy.”
“Told you,” she grinned.
I shook my head, still chewing. “You’re impossible.”
Gladia just beamed, smug as ever, half a baguette in one hand and zero shame in the other. Her bite marks were bold and unashamed, like a conquest had been claimed. I wiped the corner of my mouth, only to freeze—
That’s when I felt it.
The stares.
Not the usual glance-over-and-move-on kind of attention. No, this was staring. Intense. Heat-on-your-back type of thing. I looked up and yep—there it was.
Girls.
A handful of them across the cafeteria tables. Some had their mouths slightly open, a few were whispering, and most were red in the face. Blushing. All eyes on me.
The lazy ones, the quiet background types? They looked like they just got betrayed by their favorite bread-sharing anime character. Literal sparkles of jealousy in their eyes, and I could read their inner monologue like subtitles in a dramatic K-drama:
“Why Gladia?”
“Feed me.”
“That should be me.”
One even looked like she was chewing her pen in frustration.
Gladia noticed too, of course. She was a succubus. Situational awareness came standard.
She leaned a little closer, still smiling, but dropped her voice to a smooth purr. “Just ignore them.”
“Uh. Hard to. They’re burning holes in my face.”
She nibbled another corner of her baguette. “Post-battle demon glow. It hits different. Makes you look sexier to normal creatures. Something in the scent—power, heat, blood, mana. All mixed.”
I blinked. “…Is that science or demon logic?”
“Both,” she said cheerfully. “And it doesn’t help that you were born with Pride as your sin affinity.”
I blinked again. “Huh?”
She nodded like it was obvious. “It’s in your aura. Lust makes others attracted to us for sex, for breeding, for physical pleasure. But Pride…”—her voice dipped, tone suddenly serious—“Pride is different. It makes people want to respect you. Obey you. Worship you. Not just want you. Follow you.”
“Okay, but like—Ares still bullies me.”
She grinned. “That’s normal. Some creatures react weird when they sense Pride. They feel threatened. Like they need to challenge you or knock you down.”
I sipped my smoothie, letting the electric tang swirl around my tongue. “…Huh. That actually makes sense.”
She nodded again, casual as ever. “Oh, speaking of Ares—”
I turned toward her mid-sip. “Uh-oh.”
“I forgot to tell you.” She tapped her chin. “Ares and his little gang? They challenged Evelyn and that one friend of yours. Leon, I think.”
Mid-sip pause intensifies.
“…What?” I stared at her, smoothie still in mouth.
She blinked innocently. “Yeah. I overheard it earlier. Apparently, it got cleared for the East Wing Arena. They should be fighting right about now.”
I froze. “That explains why I couldn’t find them anywhere…”
She shrugged like it was just weather. “Arena’s probably packed. Big matches draw a crowd.”
“I’m going.” I stood up too fast, nearly spilling my smoothie.
Gladia raised a brow. “Why? Evelyn can definitely beat him.”
“Oh, I know she can,” I said, starting to grin. “I just want to see her kick his ass from the front row.”
That earned a giggle from her, light and mischievous. “Figures.”
Then she did something unexpected—she broke off a warm chunk of her precious baguette and handed it to me. Steam still curled from the edges.
“For you,” she said.
I blinked. “…Huh?”
“You’ll need snacks while watching.”
I took the bread like it was a sacred relic. “…Thanks.”
She smiled. And not her usual flirt-smile either—this one was soft. Warmer. Real.
I chewed and asked through the crust, “Do you usually share your food with everyone?”
She tilted her head. “Only with the special ones.”
Then she turned and walked away, waving the remaining half of her baguette like a flag of casual dominance.
I swallowed, eyes still on her retreating figure. “I guess I’m the special one, huh…”
I shook off the feeling and made my way toward the East Wing Arena.
