[96] New Variables

Chapter 96: New Variables

—

I stood outside Jessica's apartment door, Madelyne hovering just behind my shoulder. The hallway's flickering light cast strange shadows across her newly transformed appearance. All black clothes, dyed hair, and that confident smile that still looked jarring on a face I'd known as Jean Grey's for weeks.

"Ready?" I asked, giving her a reassuring grin.

She nodded, adjusting the small duffel bag containing everything she owned in this world – a couple of outfits from Xavier's, her Declaration of Self, and a few books Jean had insisted she take.

"As I'll ever be," she replied, something like excitement dancing in her eyes. "Though I'm still processing that I'm about to meet your girlfriend and the thief we're apparently helping."

"Not 'apparently,'" I corrected, raising my hand to knock. "We are definitely helping Felicia save her father. And Jessica isn't my-"

The door swung open before my knuckles could make contact. Jessica stood there in worn jeans and a simple gray t-shirt, her dark hair pulled back in a messy ponytail. Those eyes I'd come to know so well traveled from my face to Madelyne's, widening slightly at the gothic transformation.

"You didn't mention she went full Hot Topic," Jessica said by way of greeting, stepping aside to let us in.

I laughed. "Sorry about that. It's a recent development. She likes her make-up."

"It's so people can tell us apart," Madelyne offered, extending her hand. "Madelyne Pryor. Thank you for agreeing to this bizarre arrangement."

Jessica took her hand, grip firm as she assessed the newcomer. "Jessica Jones. And trust me, this doesn't even crack my top five bizarre arrangements this year."

The apartment looked different from my last visit. The coffee table had been cleared of case files and wine glasses, replaced by architectural blueprints and technical schematics. A laptop was open to what looked like security protocols. And perched on the arm of the couch, examining us with catlike curiosity, was Felicia Hardy.

"Well, well," she purred, unfolding herself from her position with a grace that seemed effortless. Today she'd toned down her platinum blonde hair into a high ponytail, dressed in simple black leggings and an oversized sweater that somehow still managed to look fashionable. "The mysterious Ben returns, and he's brought a friend."

"This is Madelyne," I said, setting down the duffel bag. "She's going to be staying with Jessica for a while."

Felicia approached, her steps silent on the hardwood floor. "Felicia Hardy," she introduced herself, extending a slim hand to Madelyne. "Pleasure to meet another of Ben's... companions."

The slight emphasis on that last word made me roll my eyes. As they shook hands, I noticed Madelyne's gaze traveling the apartment, noting the exits, the strategic positions, the defensive capabilities. Old habits from Xavier's training, no doubt.

"So," Jessica broke in, moving to the kitchen, "drinks? We've got water, coffee, and whatever passes for juice in this place."

"Water's fine," Madelyne replied, still taking in her surroundings.

I moved toward Felicia as Jessica and Madelyne headed for the kitchen. "How's the planning going? Any progress on-"

I felt it before I saw it – the subtle brush of fingers against my pocket. With reflexes honed by months of alien transformations, I caught Felicia's wrist just as her hand was withdrawing with my wallet.

"Really?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "We're still doing this?"

Felicia's innocent expression never wavered. "Hey~ just checking your reaction time. It's impressive."

I plucked my wallet from her fingers, tucking it securely into my front pocket. "Next time just ask if you want to hold my hand."

Madelyne returned, carrying two glasses of water. Her eyes flicked between us, a soft smile tugging at her lips. "She does that to everyone?"

"Klepto habits die hard," Jessica explained, following behind. "Don't leave anything valuable unattended."

"Noted," Madelyne said, taking a seat at the edge of the couch. She glanced at the papers spread across the coffee table, then frowned slightly. "You know this place has been under surveillance recently, right?"

A sudden stillness fell over the room. Jessica's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"

"The dust patterns on the windowsill," Madelyne explained, pointing. "Someone's opened that window from the outside within the last 48 hours. And there's a micro-abrasion on the lock that suggests it was picked rather than forced."

I blinked in surprise. Since when was she Batman?

"Wow. How the hell did you spot that?" Jessica demanded, moving to the window to examine it.

Madelyne shrugged. "I lived with people who could walk through walls and read minds. You develop an eye for security breaches."

Felicia let out a low whistle. "I think I like her," she declared, casting an appraising glance at Madelyne. "She's right. That window's been tampered with."

"Great," I muttered. "Oscorp's already watching us. I’m surprised they didn’t kill you guys in your sleep. Maybe it was just a common thief instead?"

Jessica's jaw tightened. "We need to move faster than planned. If they know we're involved, they might accelerate whatever they're planning for Felicia's father."

The mood in the room shifted instantly from cautious introduction to urgent focus. I watched as three very different women transitioned into professional mode. It was a unique sight. Jessica's stance widened, her eyes hardened. Felicia's casual lounging transformed into predatory alertness. And Madelyne's posture straightened with perhaps the cosmic awareness that came with the Phoenix seed.

Damn, it was impressive to watch.

"Alright, let's get everyone up to speed," I suggested, moving to the blueprints. "Felicia, why don't you start with the situation with your father?"

Felicia nodded, all traces of flirtation vanishing as she pulled up medical files on her phone. "My father's condition has deteriorated rapidly in the past few weeks," she explained, her clinical tone barely masking the worry underneath. "Degenerative neurological disease, supposedly incurable through conventional medicine. Oscorp approached with an experimental treatment."

She handed the phone to Madelyne, who scrolled through the medical data with practiced ease.

"But their 'treatment' is actually cross-species genetics experimentation," I added, feeling anger rise just thinking about it. "They're using desperate patients as guinea pigs for unstable animal-human hybridization."

"These protocols look familiar," Madelyne murmured, still examining the files. "My friend Dr. Hank McCoy was researching similar gene therapies at Xavier's... but this approach is dangerously unstable. The cellular degradation rate alone would make it fatal in most cases."

Felicia looked up, surprise evident on her face. "You have medical training?"

"No… I have... borrowed memories of scientific procedures," Madelyne replied carefully. "And many weeks of watching Beast work."

A telepath is such a cheat character. They could clone memories from world-class doctors and scientists and suddenly be just as expert in that field.

"Borrowed memories or not, another perspective helps," Jessica said, spreading out the Oscorp Tower blueprints. "Our objective is threefold: extract Felicia's father from the medical facility on the 35th floor, secure the complete research data as leverage, and get out without becoming lab rats ourselves."

I leaned over the blueprints, studying the layout. "Security looks tight. Multiple checkpoints, biometric scanners, armed guards."

"That's where we get creative," Felicia said with a smile that reminded me of her Black Cat persona. "I've been mapping their patrol patterns for weeks. There's a maintenance shaft here," she pointed to a narrow passage on the blueprint, "that bypasses the main security checkpoints between floors 30 and 40."

"What about the security systems?" Madelyne asked. "Even with the patrol patterns mapped, we'd still trigger alarms."

I tapped the Omnitrix. "No need to worry about that part. I could go Upgrade, take over their security system."

"Too risky," Jessica countered immediately. "If they have isolation protocols, you could get trapped in their network."

“Ehh, I don’t think Earth technology is that advanced yet.” I argued, making her frown. She could be right, of course. This was Marvel Earth, tech was higher here. Especially Oscorp. It wasn't some run-of-the-mill corporate target. They dealt in cutting-edge tech and likely had countermeasures for technological intrusions. In the worst-case scenario, being trapped in their systems as Upgrade would be disastrous.

"What about creating a diversion?" Madelyne suggested. "Draw security to one side of the building?"

Felicia's eyes lit up. "That’s easy. Nothing distracts security like a ghost sighting in the executive wing." She gave me a pointed look. "Though having an actual ghost on our team might be even better."

"Ghostfreak," I said automatically.

"Ah, right," Jessica interjected, "he could be our ace. Intangibility would bypass most physical security measures. Anyways, Ben is our trump card here since he can potentially fill many roles."

As they continued planning, I found myself watching the dynamic unfold with fascination. These three women were each powerful in their own right, and each had their own agendas and skills. Now they were forming a surprisingly effective strategy team.

"So many options. So which alien are you thinking for this?" Jessica asked, leaning against the counter. "Please say not the smelly bug one."

I felt offended. "Stinkfly has his uses."

"Wait," Felicia's head snapped up from the blueprints, interest suddenly piqued. "There's a smelly bug option? What else can you turn into? Can you turn into a cat-boy…?"

“I can turn into many things.” I straightened, a hint of pride crossing my face as he began counting off on his fingers. "Well, there's Heatblast, who's basically living fire. Four Arms has, well, four arms and super strength. XLR8 is my speed form-"

"He's got one that's basically a walking diamond," Jessica interrupted, having heard this list before.

Felicia's eyes widened instantly, her casual demeanor vanishing as she abandoned the blueprints and approached me. "Diamond, you say?" Her voice dropped to an almost reverent whisper. "How big exactly?"

"And just like that, we've lost the cat burglar," Madelyne muttered, her expression deadpan as she watched Felicia's complete shift in attention.

I laughed, shaking my head. "Sorry to disappoint, but Diamondhead's crystals don't have much value. They're indestructible, but apparently worthless on the market."

"Such a waste," Felicia sighed dramatically, returning to the blueprints with noticeably less enthusiasm.

Madelyne, despite being the newcomer, offered insights that surprised even me. "Your father’s condition, if it has worsened by the time we arrive…" Madelyne said carefully to Felicia. "The medical wing would keep specific enzymes for their gene therapy experiments. If we can identify which animal DNA they're planning to use, we might be able to synthesize a stabilizing agent."

"How would we even know that?" Jessica asked.

"The research data would have test subject profiles," Madelyne explained. "Different genetic markers respond to different animal DNA. It wouldn't be random."

"Hmm," Felicia hummed. "Wait. You could create a stabilizing agent? Just like that?"

Madelyne hesitated. "Not just like that, no. But between what I know and what Ben's Greymatter form might deduce, it's possible."

I felt a surge of pride at her quick thinking. Not just for including me in the solution, but for her adaptive problem-solving. The woman who'd been questioning her very identity days ago was now confidently planning a heist that could save a man's life.

"Greymatter?" Felicia questioned.

"Tiny alien with a massive brain, looks like a frog," Jessica explained. "Think the world's smallest super-genius."

"Convenient," Felicia remarked.

The planning continued well into the evening. We mapped entry points, established communication protocols, and assigned roles. Jessica would coordinate from outside, monitoring security channels. Felicia would use her Black Cat skills to navigate physical barriers. Madelyne would help identify the research data and medical supplies we needed. And I would provide alien muscle and versatility as needed.

It was almost midnight when Felicia's phone buzzed with an alert. Her expression darkened as she checked the screen.

"Uh, guys. Security at Oscorp just doubled," she announced, showing us the feed from a camera she'd apparently planted somewhere in the building. "They've brought in some kind of specialized team."

"They must be Hunters," Jessica guessed, leaning closer to see the screen. "Private military contractors with experience capturing enhanced individuals."

"How soon before they move your father?" I asked Felicia.

She checked another alert. "The transport team is prepping for morning. If we're going to do this, it has to be tonight."

A tense silence fell over the room. We'd planned for tomorrow night, with a full day of preparation ahead. Moving now meant going in with minimal prep and maximum risk.

"So much for sleep," Jessica muttered, already moving to a closet where she kept her Jewel costume.

“You sure you wanna wear that flashy white suit for this?” I asked.

"I've operated on less," Felicia replied to Jessica, pulling a black duffel from under the couch. It likely contained her Black Cat outfit.

I looked at Madelyne, who seemed surprisingly calm despite the sudden acceleration. "You sure you're up for this? It's okay if you want to sit this one out."

She met my gaze steadily, and for just a second, I swore I saw a flicker of cosmic fire dance in her eyes. "I didn't leave Xavier's just to hide in an apartment, Ben. I want to help."

Something in her quiet determination reminded me why I'd been drawn to her story in the first place. For all her cosmic potential and complicated origins, Madelyne Pryor wanted what anyone wanted – to make her own choices and use her abilities to make a difference.

"Jessica," I called, "got anything Madelyne can borrow? Something tactical?"

Jessica emerged from the bedroom with her Jewel costume – a sleek, form-fitting outfit that always made my pulse quicken. The white was midnight purple now, somehow. That’s why she was wearing it. "Check the second drawer in my dresser. Should be some dark clothes that'll work."

As the women prepared, I found myself standing by the window, staring out at the glittering lights of Oscorp Tower in the distance. My reflection showed a face more serious than usual, eyes narrowed in thought.

This was unlike the big threats I’d faced, and because of exactly that, this had to be handled much more delicately too. Otherwise Felicia might become an orphan.

The tower's lights seemed to pulse faintly, like a heartbeat. Or maybe that was just my imagination, projecting my own tension onto the cityscape.

"Time to move," Jessica announced, checking her watch. The others gathered. "Remember the plan. Stick to your roles. Communicate constantly."

Talk about a cannon for a mosquito situation. Bringing an Omega-Level Mutant in an Oscorp Rescue Mission. Regardless, we’d have to be really careful.
