[93] Ominous

Chapter 93: Ominous

—

The secure bedroom in Xavier's mansion looked deceptively normal at first glance. Soft beige walls, a comfortable-looking queen-sized bed with crisp white sheets, and a large window offering a view of the estate's manicured grounds.

Only the subtle hum of advanced technology betrayed its true purpose.

I noticed the modifications: silver panels embedded in the walls – telepathic dampers designed by Forge, their red status lights blinking in synchronized patterns. Medical monitoring equipment stood sentinel beside the bed, screens displaying vital signs that hadn't yet been connected to a patient. The air smelled faintly of antiseptic and ozone, the latter from equipment that had recently been powered up.

Madelyne sat perched on the edge of the bed, her posture rigid, hands clutching her folder containing the "Declaration of Self" we'd worked on. She wore a simple gray t-shirt and sweatpants, her hair pulled back in a ponytail that emphasized the sharpness of her features under the harsh medical lighting.

Emma Frost stood near the monitors, dressed in her customary white, examining readouts with clinical detachment. Xavier waited nearby in his wheelchair, fingers steepled beneath his chin, deep in thought. She wore white pants and a suit today, however, as per her usual design, the suit was split open at the front, showing her cleavage and navel. What a shameless woman.

I ignored her shining, attractive visage and turned my attention to our main heroine for todayy. "Are you sure about this?" I asked Madelyne quietly, leaning against the wall beside her. "We can still postpone if you're not ready."

She gave me a tight smile. "As ready as I'll ever be. Besides, delaying won't make Sinister's influence any easier to remove."

The door opened with a soft click, and the temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees. Jean Grey stood in the doorway, hesitating before stepping inside. She wore her X-Men uniform, a practical choice for what might become a strenuous psychic battle, but it made her look like she was prepared for combat rather than a medical procedure.

The effect on Madelyne was immediate. Her shoulders hunched forward as if she were trying to make herself smaller, her knuckles whitening around her folder. For her part, Jean looked equally uncomfortable, her eyes darting around the room before finally settling on her genetic duplicate.

"Hello, Madelyne," Jean said softly.

"Jean," Madelyne acknowledged with a stiff nod.

The silence stretched, taut as a wire. I resisted the urge to make a joke to break the tension. Some situations were too delicate for humor. My eyes met with Emma Frost, and surprisingly, I noticed that she also seemingly held herself back from joking. She smirked at me.

"I'm glad you're here, Jean," Xavier finally said, wheeling forward. "We're almost ready to begin."

Emma gestured for Madelyne to lie down on the bed. "The procedure should take approximately two hours, assuming no complications," she explained, her tone businesslike. "You'll be in a telepathically induced sleep state throughout."

"Why is she here?" Madelyne asked, nodding toward Jean without looking at her directly. "I thought you and Professor Xavier would be conducting the procedure."

"You already know the answer. Jean isn't just here as an observer," Emma replied, adjusting settings on one of the monitors. "Your shared genetic template makes her uniquely qualified to help navigate certain aspects of your mind. There are neural pathways that will respond more readily to her than to anyone else."

Xavier moved closer, his expression grave. "Madelyne, I must be completely honest with you about the risks involved. Sinister's influence is deeply woven into your neural pathways. Removing it could potentially destabilize certain memories or abilities. We need Jean's help to ensure we don't damage anything that's truly yours."

"Anything that's truly mine," Madelyne repeated, a bitter edge to her voice. "As opposed to what was copied from her."

Jean stepped forward. "I know this is uncomfortable for both of us. But I want to help. What Sinister did to you... creating you to be manipulated... it wasn't fair."

"Understatement of the century," I muttered.

Madelyne glanced at me, then back to Jean. Something shifted in her expression. Not quite acceptance, but resignation.

"Fine," she said, lying back on the bed. She still clutched her folder. "But this stays with me."

"You do know that the document won't be able to accompany your consciousness," Emma pointed out.

"I know that," Madelyne replied. "But I want it here, with my physical body. An anchor to who I am now, who I'm choosing to be."

Emma looked like she wanted to argue the point but instead nodded briskly. "As you wish. It won't interfere with the procedure."

Xavier moved to the head of the bed. "Jean and Emma will enter your mind first to establish a stable connection. Ben will follow as your emotional anchor."

"By the way, I know I have Ghostfreak, but what’s the exact way I can help her?" I asked.

"Just your presence should be enough, Benjamin. Plus you mentioned that your Ghostfreak form can avoid taking damage from mental constructs. That can be a significant advantage." Xavier reminded me. "While we could establish a psychic link for you, having an independent entity within Madelyne's mindscape gives us an advantage. You'll be less affected by any defenses Sinister may have placed."

I nodded, running my fingers over the Omnitrix. The plan made sense, but anxiety still churned in my gut. Ghostfreak's abilities were powerful but unpredictable. And there was always the risk of Zs'Skayr's influence, even with all my reassurance.

"Ready whenever you are," I said, masking my concern with confidence.

Xavier nodded to Emma and Jean, who positioned themselves on either side of Madelyne's bed.

"Focus on something that feels unquestionably yours," Xavier instructed Madelyne. "A memory, a thought, an emotion that you know belongs solely to you."

Madelyne closed her eyes, her breathing slowing. "I'm ready."

Jean and Emma placed their fingers lightly on Madelyne's temples. A subtle psychic pressure filled the room, like the moment before a thunderstorm breaks. The air seemed to thicken and shimmer.

Xavier's eyes closed in concentration. "They've established initial contact. Madelyne is now entering the telepathic sleep state. Ben, it's time."

I activated the Omnitrix, cycling through the alien silhouettes until I found the ghost. I hope it won’t malfunction now. The familiar green light washed over me as my body transformed. Bones vanished, replaced by a ghostly, floating form with a single green eye and tattered skin covering an even more nightmarish form beneath.

"Ghostfreak," I hissed, my voice now an eerie whisper.

The monitors beeped as Madelyne's vitals shifted, indicating she was fully under. Jean and Emma were already in deep concentration, their faces slack as their minds operated elsewhere. Xavier monitored their mental signatures, a faint blue glow emanating from his temples.

"Her mental defenses are active but permitting access," Xavier reported. "Proceed with caution, Ben. Remember, you're there to support Madelyne, not to directly confront any of Sinister's safeguards."

"Got it," I replied, floating toward the bed. "I'm going in."

I phased through Madelyne's physical form, allowing my consciousness to follow the psychic trail left by Jean and Emma. The sensation was disorienting, like falling through layers of reality, each one thinner than the last, until...

I emerged into Madelyne's mindscape and immediately realized something was very wrong.

I'd expected to find myself in a mental recreation of Xavier's mansion or perhaps some amalgamation of Jean's memories like last time. Instead, I floated in what could only be described as a cosmic vista. An endless expanse of star-flecked void with swirling nebulae in impossible colors. Floating islands of memory hung suspended in the space, some connected by bridges of light, others isolated and distant.

"Whoa," I whispered, my spectral form drifting among the stars. "This is definitely not standard telepathy decor."

The other wrong thing was… I felt really, really powerful suddenly. This made me recall that in darkness, Ectonurites thrived. In outer space, this truth became more evident. If I take off this outer layer of skin, I might be even stronger. But that is a final-nail type situation. IF Zs'Skayr does exist, that’s prime time for him to take over…

I was fine with this much.

I spotted Jean and Emma on a nearby memory island, a recreation of the Xavier Institute library where Madelyne and I had worked on her Declaration of Self. The memory seemed stable, the details sharp and clear. But beyond it, many of the islands flickered uncertainly, as if they weren't fully formed.

I floated toward them, passing through the cosmic void with an ease that felt natural to Ghostfreak's form.

"This is... unexpected," Emma was saying as I approached. Her mental projection appeared exactly as her physical form, pristine white clothing and all. "I've never seen a mindscape manifest like this before."

Jean nodded, her projection surrounded by a faint aura of energy. "It's almost like..."

"A cosmic consciousness, right?" I finished, joining them on the memory island. "Not exactly what you'd expect from someone who's technically only been alive for a few years."

They both turned toward me, Jean's expression troubled.

"Xavier is having difficulty maintaining his connection," Emma explained. "Something about this environment is resistant to his particular psychic signature."

As if summoned by her words, Xavier's projection appeared beside us. He was less solid than the others, flickering like a bad video call.

"This is most unusual," he said, his voice echoing strangely. "Madelyne's mind should not be structured this way."

"Where is she?" I asked, scanning the cosmic landscape for any sign of Madelyne herself.

Jean pointed to a distant island that glowed more brightly than the others. "I believe that's her core consciousness, where her sense of self resides."

We moved toward it, passing through the strange mindscape. As we approached different memory islands, I began to notice a pattern. When Xavier neared certain memories, they flickered more violently, some erupting into flames that burned without consuming.

"I appear to be triggering something unexpected," Xavier said, stopping as another memory burst into fire. "Perhaps a defense mechanism or something by her subconscious..."

I had a feeling what. It’d be crazy if true, but I had a feeling.

Before he could finish, a psychic tremor shook the entire mindscape. Stars scattered like disturbed fireflies, and the memory islands trembled. Xavier's projection became even less substantial.

"I should withdraw," he decided. "My presence is causing distress. I'll monitor from outside and maintain the link for your return."

His projection faded entirely, leaving the three of us to continue alone. The mindscape seemed to stabilize slightly with his departure.

"That was weird, and ominous…" I said, floating ahead. "Why would Madelyne's mind reject Xavier specifically?"

As the only man here, maybe I was next. Or maybe I had a worse fate coming for me… It really was ominous. What was Sinister planning?
