[85] The Phantom Thief

Chapter 85: The Phantom Thief

—

The afternoon sun beat down on Central Park as Jessica Jones scowled at her laptop screen. The footage from the jewelry store's security camera was grainy at best, practically useless at worst, just like her mood today.

She'd been sitting on this bench for two hours now, squinting against the glare while trying to catch even a glimpse of the thief who'd managed to steal half a million in diamonds without triggering a single alarm.

"Come on," she muttered, rewinding the video for the fifteenth time. "Nobody's that good."

But apparently, someone was.

The only evidence the theft had even occurred was a split-second shadow moving across a wall – too fast for normal human movement, too deliberate to be a coincidence. The store owner had hired her based on a recommendation from a previous client, someone who'd heard Jessica had "connections" with people who dealt with the unexplainable.

She snorted. Connections. That's one way to put it.

Her mind drifted to Ben, with his cocky smile and ridiculous watch. He was probably off fighting some interdimensional threat right now, while she sat here staring at shadows and drinking lukewarm coffee.

A strange chill crawled up her spine, making the hair on her arms stand on end. The sensation was subtle but unmistakable. Like someone was watching her. No, not just watching. Hovering.

"If you're planning to scare me," she said without looking up, "I should warn you I have excellent reflexes and terrible aim. Meaning I will absolutely punch you in the face by accident."

Nothing. Just the distant sound of children playing and traffic beyond the park's boundaries.

She frowned, glancing around. Had she imagined it? The paranoia of a PI who'd seen too many strange things these past few months?

"Boo."

The whispered word came from nowhere and everywhere at once, sending Jessica lurching sideways off the bench with a startled yelp. Her laptop tumbled to the grass as she spun around, fists raised.

There was nothing there. Just empty air and the mocking sound of a low, raspy chuckle.

"Show yourself!" She demanded, ignoring the concerned looks from passersby. "Right now, or I swear to god–"

"Or what?" The disembodied voice floated around her, amused and familiar. "You'll punch the air really hard?"

Jessica's eyes narrowed as realization dawned. "Tennyson, you ass."

A shimmer in the air, like heat waves rising from pavement, and suddenly Ghostfreak materialized before her – one-eyed, gray, spectral, and definitely laughing at her expense.

"The look on your face," the alien form rasped, its single green eye crinkling with amusement. "Priceless."

"Ben Tennyson, you're dead," she growled, snatching her laptop from the grass and checking for damage. "The moment you turn back into a human with actual bones to break, you're dead."

Ghostfreak's form rippled with silent laughter. "Worth it."

The Omnitrix symbol on his chest flashed green, and Ben Tennyson stood where the ghostly alien had been, grinning like he'd just won a prize. He looked different from the first time she'd met him. She'd already seen his changes last time, but given the situation, she didn't have time to note them properly. He was much taller now, his shoulders broader, a new confidence in the way he carried himself. The watch on his wrist gleamed in the sunlight, reminding her of exactly how not-normal her life had become.

"Surprise," he said, spreading his arms wide.

Jessica crossed the distance between them in two quick strides and smacked his chest lightly with her free hand. "You absolute jerk! I could have broken my laptop."

"But you didn't," he pointed out, catching her hand and pulling her closer. "Besides, your reflexes are better than that. I've seen you dodge alien slugs and crazed stalkers."

Despite her annoyance, Jessica felt a smile tugging at her lips. She'd missed this – missed him. Their text conversations over the past weeks had been sporadic at best, with Ben bouncing around the country on his summer road trip while she handled cases in Manhattan. The last real conversation they'd had was after the Simpson incident, and even that had been cut short.

"How did you find me?" she asked, allowing herself to be drawn into a quick hug. "I didn't tell you where I'd be."

He tapped the side of his head. "Ghostfreak has a sixth sense for pretty girls on park benches."

"That's possibly the creepiest thing you've ever said to me."

"I tracked your phone," he admitted with a shrug. "Did you forget the Grey Matter hack I installed? Don't worry, I only use my powers for good. And occasional pranks."

Jessica rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress her smile. "Glad to see your ego's still intact."

"Like you haven't been waiting for me to show up," he teased, his eyes dropping to her lips.

She hadn't realized how much she'd missed him until this moment – the easy banter, the way he looked at her like she was both dangerous and precious. Before she could formulate a suitably sarcastic response, Ben leaned in and kissed her.

The kiss was gentle at first, a hello after too long apart, but quickly deepened as Jessica's free hand found its way to the back of his neck. His arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her flush against him as the world narrowed to just the two of them.

"Young people these days! No sense of public decency!"

The sharp comment broke through their moment. Jessica pulled back to see an elderly man glaring at them from the path, leaning heavily on his cane as he shook his head in disapproval.

"Sorry!" Ben called, not sounding sorry at all. "Just reuniting with my girlfriend after weeks apart. You understand, right?"

Girlfriend? The word sent an unexpected flutter through Jessica's chest. Bastard. He's playing with me. A few days ago, same bastard called me just friend.

"In my day, we saved such displays for private moments," the old man huffed, shuffling past them with an exaggerated eye roll. "No respect for propriety."

Ben watched him go with an amused expression. "Pretty sure 'his day' included making out at drive-in theaters, but okay."

Jessica laughed, the tension broken. "Come on, let's sit down before we scandalize any more senior citizens."

They settled on the bench, Ben's arm draped casually around her shoulders as Jessica reopened her laptop. The familiarity of it struck her – how easily they fell back into each other's space, as if the time apart had been nothing. As if they'd known each other for years, and not a mere month.

"So," Ben said, peering at her screen, "what are we looking at? New case?"

"This… okay, don't laugh. It's not really some genocide of city destruction crime. It's just a Jewelry heist," she explained, grateful for the shift to professional territory. "Half a million in diamonds gone without a trace. Security systems untouched, no signs of forced entry. The only evidence is this." She pointed to the shadow on the screen. "Watch. Right... there."

Ben leaned closer, his brow furrowing. "That's not normal human movement. Too smooth and too fast."

"That's what I thought." Jessica nodded, pleased he'd noticed. "My client thinks it might be some kind of enhanced thief. The papers are calling them a 'ghost thief,' but my gut says it's more likely someone with powers or tech. Possibly both."

"The Black Cat," Ben said suddenly, looking thoughtful.

Jessica blinked. "What?"

"Um, there's a rumor going around about a thief called the Black Cat. I don't know much, but this might be her," He tapped the screen where the shadow moved. "Professional thief. She has a thing for expensive shiny objects. This fits her M.O."

"And how do you-" Jessica started, then shook her head. "Right. You and your mysterious knowledge of things."

She'd never quite gotten a straight answer about how Ben seemed to know so much about certain people and events. He was frustratingly vague about the details at times. Must be one of his aliens. Just another mystery in the Ben Tennyson puzzle box.

"Anyways. We can discuss the thief later. Tell me what you've been up to," she said, closing her laptop and setting it aside. "Your texts were sparse on details."

Ben's expression shifted, becoming more guarded. "It's been a busy few weeks. The usual stuff. Monsters, magic, mayhem."

"Uh-huh." Jessica raised an eyebrow. "And the non-usual stuff?"

He hesitated, and Jessica felt a knot form in her stomach. That wasn't Ben's normal pause, that was the pause of someone deciding how much truth to tell.

Did he not trust her?

"Well. I ran into some complications with this clone of Jean Grey. You know, the superheroine, Marvel Girl, the telepath from Xavier's school?" He asked.

“I heard of her… She's got a clone?”

He rubbed the back of his neck. "She was being controlled by this guy called Mister Sinister. Almost turned the mansion into a nightmare dimension."

"I... see." Jessica struggled to keep her expression neutral. "And how did you handle that?"

"I went into her mind as Ghostfreak, then when that didn't work, used Feedback to drain her powers. Ah, Feedback’s this new alien I unlocked. I gotta show you how he works sometimes, he's really fun!" He was so excited about this new alien, it made her smile. She really wanted to see. "She's doing better now. Calls herself Madelyne."

Madelyne. Jean. And before that, didn't he mention some magician girl? Jessica felt her chest tighten.

She knew she had no claim on Ben – they hadn't exactly defined what they were to each other even if he just lied to the old man earlier – but hearing him talk about other women with such ease stung more than she wanted to admit.

"Sounds intense," she managed, hating how fake her voice sounded to her own ears. "You've been busy saving the world again."

Ben studied her face, too perceptive for her comfort. "What about you? Besides the jewelry case."

Jessica shrugged, trying for nonchalance. "Eh. The usual. Followed a few cheating spouses, located a runaway teen, stopped a mugger who clearly didn't know who he was messing with. Not as fun as your days.”

"And you texted me because...?" His tone was gentle, curious. “The jewellery case doesn't sound that crazy.”

Because I missed you, you bastard. Because I was thinking about you. She wanted to say to his face. Because sometimes it feels like I'm just one of many women in your orbit. But she couldn't say any of that.

"Yeah, it's not… I'm sorry. I know you're busy so I didn't plan to call about this but I was missing... Anyways. Haah, I must be bothering you, right?" The words tumbled out, revealing more vulnerability than she'd intended.

He must think I'm annoying.

Ben's expression softened into something she couldn't quite read. He reached out, taking her hand in his. "Jess, look at me."

She did, reluctantly.

"You're never bothering me," he said firmly. "Ever. Did I delay coming when you called?

"Well, no… But you've got all these world-ending threats and magical supervillains to deal with," she argued. "And I'm calling you about what, a jewelry thief?"

"A jewelry thief that matters to you," he countered. "Which means it matters to me."

Jessica sighed. "I shouldn't have texted. It was stupid. I just..." She trailed off, unable to finish the thought.

Ben shifted closer, his arm sliding around her waist. "You just what?"

"I just wanted to see you," she admitted quietly. "That's all."

Something in Ben's eyes changed – a softening, a deepening. He pulled her into an embrace that felt more intimate than their earlier kiss, his chin resting on top of her head.

"Jessica Jones," he said, his voice muffled against her hair, "when are you going to realize that you're special to me?"

She pulled back slightly to look at him. "Am I? Because it sounds like you've been collecting quite the fan club lately."

The moment the words left her mouth, she regretted them. She had no right to be jealous, no claim to exclusivity. They'd never talked about being anything more than... whatever they were.

Ugh, me and my blabber mouth.

At the same time, she was curious what he’d say. What could he say?
