Chapter 418
The bells of the clock tower echoed through the cobblestone streets of Orario, a melancholy chime that seemed to mirror the heavy knot in Bell Cranel’s stomach.
He had bolted from his home with a frantic urgency, his mind occupied by a singular, lingering lapse in judgment.
As he turned onto West Main, his boots clattered against the sun-baked stones, the midday heat radiating upward in shimmering waves.
His pace faltered as he reached the entrance of the Hostess of Fertility.
There, leaning against a weathered pillar, stood Syr.
She appeared entirely indifferent to the oppressive glare of the afternoon sun, her sharp, perceptive eyes scanning the bustling crowd with an intensity that set his already fraying nerves on edge.
Bell felt a sudden, sharp pang of guilt.
Many times, in the periphery of his routine, he had noticed her watching the street in this exact manner. Intuition……that quiet, insistent voice……whispered that she had been looking for him all along.
It was a realization that made his chest ache with apology.
He didn’t hesitate.
Bell sprinted the final dozen paces, his hands trembling slightly as he held out the woven basket he had failed to return two days prior.
He came to a halt directly before her and, without a word of preamble, bowed his head a full ninety degrees.
“I am so sorry!” Bell shouted, his voice cracking slightly in his desperation to convey his contrition.
The sudden outburst acted like a stone dropped into a glass pond, sending ripples of attention through the street.
Passersby slowed, casting curious glances at the famous white-haired boy behaving so awkwardly.
Syr’s expression shifted, a faint, flustered flush creeping up her neck as she noticed the eyes of the city turning their way.
“Bell, please, raise your head,” she urged, her voice soft but insistent, her hands hovering as if to physically help him straighten.
“I really don’t mind. Truly.”
“But… I kept it for so long,” Bell insisted, refusing to budge from his rigid, apologetic posture.
The guilt felt heavy, like lead in his lungs.
Syr sighed, a sound of genuine, clumsy affection.
She stepped closer, her shadow falling over him, offering a brief respite from the harsh sunlight.
“I understand how you feel, but that is enough apologizing. You need to be more careful from now on, that’s all. What’s done is done; the past is a closed book. Focus on what you can actually do from this moment forward.” She said.
Her words hit him with a strange, stabilizing weight.
Slowly, Bell lifted his head, his face still tinged with pink.
He met her gaze, finding not the judgment he feared, but a kind, patient smile that seemed to pull him back to reality.
It was moments like these that reminded him how much more mature she was…..she possessed a strange gravity that made his own anxieties feel, if not small, then at least manageable.
“On another note,” she continued, her voice shifting to a lighter, almost teasing tone.
“Without any news for the last two days, I was starting to get worried about you. So worried, in fact, that I was making all sorts of mistakes at work.”
Bell flinched.
“I am really, truly sorry about that. I never intended for you to be troubled because of me.”
Syr tilted her head, a glimmer of something sharp and playful flickering in her eyes.
“Do you have any idea how much the others teased me because of it?”
She offered him a look of mock-resentment that caught him entirely off guard.
Bell blinked, his eyes widening in bewilderment.
He opened his mouth to apologize again, but Syr, suddenly overcome with a deep, rosy blush, gave a feigned, frantic cough to hide her embarrassment.
She spun on her heel, signaling for him to follow her into the cool interior of the pub.
He trailed behind her, still utterly oblivious to the subtle undercurrents of her behavior, his mind trying to reconcile her frustration with her kindness.
They reached his usual seat.
He placed the basket on the table and immediately reached for his pouch of Valis.
He felt that simply returning the item wasn't enough…..bringing money was his clumsy way of balancing the scales, of ensuring the interaction felt 'settled.'
With the menu in his hands, Bell took a moment to observe the room.
It was a quieter hour, the pub populated mostly by civilian women.
He watched a group of beast-kin mothers with their small children, their laughter ringing out in the dim atmosphere.
It was a scene of domesticity that felt worlds away from the dark, jagged floors of the Dungeon.
He watched, fascinated, as they tore into plates of exotic, vibrant fruits.
He had always assumed their kind preferred meat, but the vigor with which the children devoured the sweet produce…..their cheeks puffing out like squirrels, juice staining their chins…..made him smile.
It was a sight of unbridled vitality.
His gaze drifted, eventually landing on a small bookshelf tucked into the shadowed corner behind his table.
His brow furrowed.
“Hey, was that decoration there before?” he asked, nodding toward a thick, black-bound book with an intricate, eye-catching design.
Syr, who had returned to collect his order, paused.
She looked at the book, then back at him, a flicker of hesitation crossing her expression before she settled into a smooth, practiced smile.
“Hee-hee, well, that’s… it was left behind by a customer a while back. We kept it there so they could see and reclaim it if they ever returned.”
“Oh,” Bell said, his voice dropping to a sympathetic murmur.
“I suppose it’s easy to forget things when you’re drinking, isn't it?”
Syr didn't answer directly, merely offering a cryptic smile.
She whisked away and returned moments later with a slice of cake and a steaming cup of tea.
Instead of moving on to the next table, she pulled up a chair.
Anya, who drifted nearby, glanced at the two of them with a series of exaggerated winks and strange, pointed gestures before moving on to avoid their line of sight.
Bell was too focused on Syr to notice the stifled giggles of the other waitresses.
He felt a sudden urge to confide in someone.
He felt stagnant, adrift in a sea of indecision, and his motivation had become like a flickering candle in a drafty room.
“Syr,” he began, his voice lowered.
He told her everything……or as much as he could articulate…..about his feeling of laziness, and that hollow, aching restlessness.
She watched him with an intensity that made him feel entirely seen.
She didn't interrupt, and she didn't offer hollow pleasantries.
When he finished, she smiled, a small, knowing quirk of her lips.
“Why don’t you try some literature?” she suggested.
Bell paused, the fork halfway to his mouth.
“Literature?”
“Yes. You don’t read often, do you, Bell?”
She leaned in slightly, her voice dropping into a conspiratorial register.
“Take a chance. Sometimes, the world inside a book can provide exactly the kind of stimulation you’re lacking. It can stir the blood in ways the real world sometimes fails to do.”
The word literature resonated in his mind, a foreign concept he hadn't touched since his grandfather’s stories in the village.
He thought of the heroes from those old legends, the ones who stood against impossible odds with nothing but their resolve.
Could a book offer him that same spark?
He needed to reconnect with that sense of wonder, that burning desire to be something more.
“Yeah,” Bell said firmly, his eyes brightening.
“I think I will. Thanks, Syr. I’ll start reading.”
“I’m happy to be of service,” she replied, a genuine warmth radiating from her.
Seeing that he had accepted her advice, she leaned forward, her eyes dancing.
“Do you have a book in mind?”
“Not really. My goddess has plenty of books, I’ll probably just borrow one of those.”
He stood, prepared to find his way to a shop or back home.
Syr reached out, her fingers brushing against the black-bound book on the shelf.
She pulled it down and held it out to him.
“In that case, why not try this one?”
Bell pulled back slightly.
“But… it’s someone else’s. You said it was forgotten.”
“As long as you bring it back, there shouldn't be a problem,” Syr pressed, her voice taking on a strangely compelling, almost melodic quality.
“Books don’t vanish, Bell. And I suspect it belonged to an adventurer. There might be something useful in here, something meant for you.”
He looked at the book, then at her.
The design was beautiful, unlike anything he had ever seen, and the offer felt strangely heavy with import.
He struggled internally…..he was a private person, and the idea of intruding on a stranger’s property felt intrusive.
But Syr was watching him, her eyes searching his face, and then, a flicker of vulnerability crossed her features.
“Nothing to worry about,” she whispered.
“Honestly, Mama Mia doesn’t like having it cluttering the bar. You'd be doing us a favor by taking it. And…” She looked down, her cheeks flushing a deep, endearing pink.
“…I want to help you any way I can, Bell. This is all I can reasonably do for you right now, so please. Take it. For me.”
The request struck him with a physical force.
It wasn’t just a book; it was a connection, a bridge she was building between them.
He felt a surge of warmth in his chest.
How could he refuse her when she went to such lengths to be kind?
“If you’re sure,” Bell said, reaching out.
As he closed his fingers around the smooth, textured cover, his skin brushed against hers.
A jolt, sharp and electric, sparked between them.
He pulled his hand back, heart hammering against his ribs, his face heating up in an instant.
“T-thanks,” he stuttered, scrambling to pay the bill, his movements clumsy and hurried.
“I’ll… I’ll see you later?”
Syr watched him, a satisfied, serene smile gracing her lips.
“Yes, Bell. Thank you for coming today.”
She stood there as he rushed toward the door, clutching the black book to his chest as if it were a shield. She had set the wheels in motion, the book sitting snugly in his possession.
However, just as Bell reached the door, his body collided with something as unyielding as a stone wall.
The impact sent a jolt through his frame, and he stumbled backward, the world tilting precariously.
Instinctively, Bell’s grip tightened on the book.
He refused to let go, his mind racing with the fear that the binding might snap or the pages might tear upon hitting the floorboards.
It was someone else’s property, after all, and the weight of that responsibility far outweighed his own need for balance.
Because of his refusal to break his fall with his hands, Bell hit the ground in a tangle of limbs, landing in an awkward, sprawling posture.
A chorus of light giggles erupted from the nearby tables, where several mothers and their children were enjoying their meal.
Bell felt the heat of a blush crawl up his neck, staining his cheeks a vivid crimson.
“Ugh,” Bell groaned, quickly scrambling to find his footing.
He winced, rubbing the back of his head where a dull ache had begun to throb.
“Huh. Sorry, kid. Didn’t see you there… are you alright?” a deep, resonant voice asked.
Bell looked up and found a hand extended toward him.
The young-man standing in the doorway was a striking beast-man, his presence commanding yet strangely approachable.
His hair, a wild, fiery red, was styled like a rough mane that cascaded across his broad shoulders.
His eyes matched the hue of his hair……piercing red orbs that seemed to glow with a predator’s intensity.
He looked both terrifying and remarkably kind, a duality that left Bell momentarily speechless.
