Chapter 332
The sun climbed over the towering walls of Orario, its golden fingers brushing away the lingering shadows of the night.
In the blink of an eye, the nocturnal quiet gave way to the bustling energy of morning, welcoming a new day to the Labyrinth City.
Within the halls of the Bahamut Familia’s residence, the transition was marked not just by the light, but by the familiar sounds of a large household stirring to life.
As was the custom, the majority of the Familia members were gathered in the expansive kitchen for breakfast.
The air should have been filled with the rich aroma of toasted bread, sizzling meats, and the lighthearted banter that usually accompanied their first meal.
Soon, the members who had spent the night on patrol would return, hungry and weary, to join the fold.
Yet, despite the routine, a strange, heavy atmosphere hung over the long wooden table.
It was a subtle shift, a crackle in the air that set everyone’s nerves on edge.
The source of this tension was seated at the head of the table: their goddess, Bahamut, and their captain, Draco.
To a casual observer, they seemed to be acting as they always did….sharing space, eating in quiet dignity….but to the keen eyes of the others, something was fundamentally different.
There was a fluffy softness in Bahamut’s gaze that hadn't been there yesterday, and a certain rigidness in Draco’s posture that spoke of a boy trying very hard to appear casual while failing miserably.
Michalis observing all this, shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
He leaned toward Vasiliki, his sister, who was currently radiating a palpable aura of irritation.
“Hey, hey,” Michalis whispered, his voice barely audible over the clinking of cutlery.
Vasiliki didn’t look up.
Instead, she growled sharply, her fork descending like a spear to stab a link of sausage on her plate.
The metal prongs screeched against the ceramic with aggressive force.
“What is it?” she snapped, her eyes fixed on the mangled meat.
Michalis flinched, nearly dropping his own fork.
“Oh, sorry,” he muttered, cowering slightly and backing away from her personal space. Realizing that the seat next to his sister was currently a danger zone, he hastily grabbed his plate and moved to the other side of the table to sit beside Dimitra.
“By the gods, what’s wrong with her?” Michalis muttered under his breath, eyeing Vasiliki warily.
She was chewing her food with such intensity it looked like she was trying to grind the very concept of breakfast into dust.
Dimitra, who possessed a more observational temperament, sighed softly.
“Well, there aren’t many things that can make her act that crazy,” she said, her voice laced with a knowing weariness.
Vasileios, leaned in, joining the hushed conversation.
“Do you know something?”
Across from them, Iska perked up, her ears twitching.
“Yeah, I’m curious too. The vibe in here is like a powder keg.”
Dimitra hesitated, her eyes flickering toward the head of the table where Draco sat.
She and Vasiliki had been returning from having a late night treat, and had accidentally stumbled upon an intimate moment….a quiet rendezvous between their captain and their goddess under the moonlight.
“I don’t know if I’m supposed to say… but…” Dimitra trailed off, her gaze meeting Draco’s.
Draco, sensing the weight of several pairs of eyes on him, stopped mid-bite.
He was someone whose very presence usually commanded the room, but currently, he looked like a boy caught with his hand in the honey jar.
He offered an awkward, lopsided smile, realizing that the secret was already halfway out.
“It’s not exactly a big secret,” Draco announced, his voice steadying as he decided to face the music.
“But Bahamut and I are going on our first date tomorrow.”
The silence that followed was instantaneous and absolute.
It was as if the very oxygen had been sucked out of the room.
Every jaw dropped, every movement froze.
The members of the Bahamut Familia stared at their captain, some with wide-eyed shock, others with a dawning realization of the drama that was about to unfold.
The silence lasted for exactly three seconds before it was shattered by a sharp, violent crack.
Everyone’s attention snapped to Clair.
The Tiger-girl sat perfectly still, but beneath her hand, her ceramic plate had splintered into several jagged pieces.
Gravy and bits of egg leaked onto the table through the fractures.
“Ah, sorry about that. I was just surprised,” Clair said.
Her voice was terrifyingly calm, but she wore a smile that didn't reach her eyes…..a baring of teeth that looked more like a predator’s snarl than an expression of joy.
Without another word, Clair stood up.
She gathered the broken ceramic pieces and the remains of her breakfast with jerky, mechanical movements and tossed them into the trash bin.
Then, without looking back, she stormed out of the kitchen, her tail lashing behind her like a whip.
The newer members of the Familia sat in stunned silence, watching the doorway where she had vanished.
“Well… that was intense,” Eleni said, breaking the spell.
While the outburst was a shock to the newcomers, the original members of the household seemed more resigned than surprised.
They knew the history; they knew the hearts involved.
“Wait, wait, wait,” Celty interjected, throwing her hands up in a gesture of utter confusion.
She looked between the empty chair where Clair had sat, the fuming Vasiliki, and the stoic Draco.
“What by the gods is going on? What’s with these weird dynamics I’m sensing? Is this a Familia or a stage play?”
Nikolaos sensing the oncoming drama, stood up and carried his empty dish to the sink.
“Sigh. It’s a complicated story, Celty, but I am not going to be the one to explain it.”
He dried his hands and made a swift exit, clearly wanting no part of the impending gossip session.
As if following a pre-arranged signal, the rest of the original members…..Dimitra, Michalis, Vasiliki, and Vasileios…..all stood up in unison.
Even Draco, looking like he was escaping a battlefield, offered a quick nod and hurried out with Bahamut, presumably to make preparations for their date.
Within a minute, the kitchen was significantly emptier.
Only Eleni, Celty, Iska, and Maryuu remained at the table, surrounded by the remnants of the morning meal.
Celty turned to Eleni, her eyes wide with a demand for answers.
“Eleni, speak. I feel like I walked into the middle of a war zone.”
Eleni leaned back, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
She enjoyed being the keeper of secrets, especially when those secrets involved her “big brother.”
“Hmm, there isn’t much time to give a full account before we have to head to the dungeon,” Eleni began, “but I suppose a simple explanation should suffice. Basically, Clair and Vasiliki love Draco-nii romantically. But Draco-nii likes our goddess. They aren’t exactly thrilled about Bahamut-sama snatching their crush first.”
Eleni paused, leaning in closer as if sharing a grand conspiracy.
“Just between us, I don’t think Bahamut-sama wants to monopolize him. She has implied several times that she’s willing to share, but let’s be honest….who doesn’t want to be the first choice?”
Iska frowned, her brow furrowed in genuine perplexity.
“Hmm, that makes sense in a messy way, but why would she want to share? If she’s a goddess and he’s the captain, wouldn’t it be better if she had him all to herself? gods are usually pretty possessive of their favorites.”
Before Eleni could answer, Celty jumped in, her mind stuck on a different detail.
“No, no, no! Before that….aren’t you all siblings? Clair and Draco and you guys? Isn’t that like… incest or something? I thought you were all one big family.”
The table went quiet again, but this time, the three other girls simply stared at Celty as if she had just suggested the sky was purple.
“I can’t believe I have to explain such an obvious thing,” Eleni muttered, rubbing her temples. She pointed to herself and then rattled off the names of the others.
“While Michalis, Nikolaos, Dimitra, Vasileios, Vasiliki, and I are blood-related siblings, Clair and Draco aren’t. I assumed it was obvious since we all look so different. I mean, Draco-nii is basically a Dragon-kin. Clair is a Tiger-person. Meanwhile, the rest of us are a mix between Chienthrope and Cat-people. We’re a bit of a genetic jumble, but we’re the only ones in the group who share biological parents.”
“Oh,” Maryuu muttered, looking a bit sheepish.
“That actually makes a lot more sense. I just assumed you were all unrelated orphans who happened to stick together. I’ve seen groups like that in Orario before. I was afraid it would be insensitive to ask, so I kept my mouth shut.”
Eleni nodded understandingly.
“I get why you’d think that. To be fair, the only things similar about me and my five blood siblings are our faces. Who would think we were related when our species look so random? Inheritance is a roll of the dice when your parents are different beastman races.”
She turned her attention back to Iska’s earlier question, her expression becoming more thoughtful.
“Anyway, as for why our goddess would want to share him… I don’t know her divine thoughts for certain, but I have a speculation. As you all should be aware by now, Draco-nii is the last of his species….at least as far as we know. And, as the laws of the world go, gods cannot have children with mortals.”
She let the sentence hang in the air, waiting for the realization to click.
“So…” Maryuu said, her eyes widening as she connected the dots.
“You think she’s willing to share because she knows she can’t provide him with blood descendants? And descendants are needed so his race doesn’t go extinct?”
“Exactly,” Eleni said.
“It’s a heavy burden to be the last of a line. Bahamut-sama loves him, and because she loves him, she probably wants his legacy to continue in a way she can’t physically fulfill. But, of course, that’s just my theory. Knowing her, there are likely a dozen other reasons she hasn't mentioned.”
Iska leaned back, exhaling a long breath.
“Hmm, this all sounds incredibly complicated. I wonder what Alise and Kaguya will think about this when they hear the news.”
Celty bolted upright in her chair.
“Why mention them?! Don’t tell me they like Draco too?” she yelled, her voice echoing off the kitchen walls.
Maryuu chuckled, leaning her chin on her hand.
“Why are you reacting like it’s the end of the world, Celty? Don’t tell me you like him too.”
“O-Of course I don’t!” Celty stammered, her face flushing a deep shade of crimson.
“What nonsense are you saying? I barely even talk to him! He’s just… our captain! A very scary, dragon-y captain!”
“How suspicious,” Iska teased, her eyes narrowing as she watched Celty’s frantic denial.
Eleni burst out laughing, her eyes morphing into amused crescent discs.
She could already see the future of the Familia, and it was filled with enough romantic tension to power a magic stone lamp for a century.
“Hahaha! Draco-nii really has his work cut out for him. He can slay monsters in the Deep Floors without breaking a sweat, but he’s completely helpless against a bunch of girls.”
“Can’t blame them,” Iska admitted with a shrug.
“He’s strong, he’s not bad looking, he’s wealthy, and he has a tolerable personality too. It makes sense why so many eccentric girls would be drawn to him. I can’t say I’m not a little attracted myself. The biggest turn-off, however, would be the whole harem thing. I’m not sure I have the patience for that much competition.”
“Whaa?! What the hell are you saying?!” Celty yelled again, her brain seemingly unable to process the casual admission.
Iska only shook her head and offered a serene smile.
Maryuu turned her gaze toward Eleni.
“What about you, Eleni? Are you attracted to your ‘brother’?”
Eleni didn't miss a beat.
She leaned forward, resting her cheek against her palm, and offered a cryptic, feline smile.
“Who knows?”
She thought it was a cool, mysterious way to end the conversation, a perfect exit line.
However, Maryuu didn’t look convinced; she simply raised an eyebrow, clearly planning to press the issue later.
Before the interrogation could continue, the sound of footsteps approached the kitchen.
Chloe entered the room.
She wasn't alone.
Walking beside her was a small guest, someone who looked entirely out of place in the home of a rising Familia.
“Have a seat. I will serve you breakfast in a few minutes,” Chloe said coldly, directing the small girl toward the table.
The guest was Lili, the Pallum supporter whom Draco had rescued from a precarious situation the previous day.
She looked tiny and fragile compared to the girls sitting at the table.
Her clothes were worn, and she moved with a practiced, self-effacing hunch, as if trying to take up as little space as possible.
Nervously, Lili looked around the room.
Her eyes flitted from the ceilings to the polished wood of the table, but she pointedly avoided eye contact with anyone.
In the Soma Familia, her previous home, making eye contact was a gamble.
To those at the top of the hierarchy, a direct gaze from a "worthless" supporter was seen as defiance, an act of resistance that usually resulted in a swift and brutal beating.
To Lili, the world was a series of predators, and the best way to survive was to act like prey that wasn't worth the effort of hunting.
Observing the girl’s trepidation, Eleni’s mischievous aura vanished, replaced by a soft, welcoming warmth.
She was a natural at reading people, sometimes, and she could see the trauma written in the Pallum’s body language.
“Ah, you must be the kid Draco-nii brought home yesterday,” Eleni began, her voice gentle.
“Hi! My name is Eleni Black. What’s yours?”
The little girl swallowed hard, her fingers twisting in the fabric of her hood.
“Liliruca Arde,” she replied in a small, shaky voice.
She kept her head bowed, staring intently at the grain of the wooden table.
“Lili-chan, huh? That’s a pretty name,” Eleni praised.
Lili didn't smile.
If anything, her frown deepened.
‘Why is she being so nice to me?’ she thought, her mind racing with suspicion.
‘We don’t even know each other. What does she want? Is she going to ask for a favor? Is she setting me up for something?’
Her life so far had taught her that kindness was usually a mask for something uglier.
Sudden warmth from a stranger was a red flag, an indicator that a trap was being laid.
Although she had felt a strange, fleeting sense of safety the previous day with Draco, Riveria, and Alise, those were legendary figures.
This was just another girl, and Lili knew that girls could be the cruelest of all.
She stayed on high alert, her muscles tensed to run at a moment's notice.
In her world, reality was a series of betrayals, and she wasn't about to let her guard down just because someone had a nice smile and a friendly voice.
Eleni noticed the tension….the way the girl’s shoulders were hunched up to her ears…..and realized that winning Lili’s trust wouldn't be as simple as a few kind words.
This girl had been broken by the city, and it would take more than a breakfast to put the pieces back together.
As Chloe set a steaming plate of food in front of Lili, the silence of the kitchen felt different…..no longer charged with romantic jealousy, but heavy with the weight of a child’s fear.
Outside, the sun continued to rise, oblivious to the complex web of love, family, and trauma that defined the lives within the Bahamut Familia.
