Chapter 84: Powering up
Golden light covered the room as she healed me. I looked at my arms as the skin slowly stitched itself back together. This was gonna take some time. I pulled up the status screen in front of me. I quickly glanced towards the girl. There was no change on her face as the big green box appeared before her. I guess the only people that can see it are those with a system.

I have 24 points to spend if I remember correctly; Diva said you could use points to improve your body. Let's give that a try, shall we? I focused my sights on the body stat.
Do you want to put 1 point into body
Errr…yes?
1 point used
HP: 900 -> 1000
STAMINA: 800 -> 900
Warmth radiated across my body, making me shiver. Suddenly, the golden light faded. “errr ahhh! What was that?! Why did you-”
“Did I say you can stop?” I Snapped “Keep healing and be quiet!” the girl whimpered away as she kept up her healing spell. That was close. I was caught off guard by that amazing feeling. My body feels better than it ever has. I looked at my status 23 points available huh; Let's spend a few points, shall we? Now then, what do I need….
******
Some time later….
That’s should do it. It took a lot of internal arguing, but I’ve settled on a decision.
Are you sure you want to spend 14 points?
Yes.
HP: 1000 -> 1400
Stamina: 1000 -> 1300
Warmth wafted through my body this time; however, this time, I was able to hold the shaking in. In total, I spent 15 points. I put 5 points into body, recovery and soul. I didn’t bother putting points into mind as I already had plenty of points in it and an internal organ dedicated to it.
I put points into body for obvious reasons: more health = less likely to die. Soul, to me, is a skill whose uses are very subtle but noticeable. According to the status, the soul stat in general, improves my ability to read people and my composure and resilience to fear. After adding those points, I now feel less jittery, more confident and more aware of other people. In essence, I can read her better. Right now, she’s terrified of me and is actively looking for an escape, judging by how her head is tilted towards the window.
“Don’t think about the window. I'll gut you before you even make it halfway.” She whimpered again, and her gaze darted back to me. It's very useful.
Recovery was a questionable one. It’s really hard for me to see what it is doing. Like what am I recovering and at what rate? Seriously, now I know why Diva gets frustrated at this system. It tells me everything and nothing at the same time. Why can't it just tell me how much health im recovering
Would you like to enable Advanced Monitoring metrics?
Errr….what…s..sure?

Whoa, that’s amazing?! Also, Why weren’t these available earlier?! This system…. I don’t envy Diva at all. But thanks to this, I can see what recovery is actually doing for me. Which is not much, but I can't complain.
“Are you done yet?!”
“A….almost. Your body….It's not normal At all….”
“Are you insulting me?” I replied, causing her small frame to waver
“No! Sorry! It’s just…It's just…. It keeps changing. Like it’s alive.”
“I am alive dumbass. How long till you finished.”
“Give me one more minute. I'm almost do-“
*BANG BANG BANG*
Several bangs echoed through the house. Instantly, I got up and hid against the wall, taking the girl with me. Her little body annoyingly trembled as I held her. Seriously, how timid can 1 person be?
<Little one>
<yes, big sis?>
<Go see who our guests are.>
The little one flew out the window as I listened. I could hear a commotion downstairs as I hid. Judging by the cacophony of voices, it’s a party. But how was I found so soon? No matter, well, just chalk it up to dumb luck.
A few moments later, the little one flew back into the room <Big sis. 5 people Downstairs. I think 2 of them are magic users.>
Hmmm. Tricky….
<Are the windows and exits shut?>
<Yes.>
So they are in an enclosed area…. Yeah, that might work, but it will be dangerous for her.
I pushed the small girl to the side and signalled for her to stay. As I moved to the centre of the room, Let's put that newly earned strength to the test.
I raised my fist up and started listening. Waiting and listening, I followed their movements below me. I waited and waited until, finally, they were all in one group.
I took a deep breath in and held it as I punched the ground. The floor ruptured sending wooden splinters up and everywhere as large cracks spiralled and spread uncontrollably from where my fist impacted. A split second later, there was a loud SNAP as the ground gave way, and I fell into the group of people. In a flash, I assessed the room 5 humans in close proximity, stunned and dazed. Perfect
I forced all the air I was holding out of my mushroom cap, filling the room with a dense cloud of mushroom spores before they could react. As soon as the last spore left, I jumped up back into the bedroom, grabbed the girl and bolted out the bedroom window.
She wailed like a banshee, and we fell towards the ground. I quickly pulled her tight and braced for a rough landing.
“Brace yourself!”
I Landed with a loud thud on the ground that sent intense vibrations up my legs and endoskeleton. But thankfully, I held firm. I quickly took the girl and pushed her against the wall.
“DID YOU BREATHE ANY OF THAT!” I yelled. Causing the girl to stumble over her words
“Wha… I don’t … wahat happe-”
“DID YOU” I yelled again. Causing her to squeal and shake her head. I watched her for a few moments, looking for any darkening blood vessels and swelling. Skill: Luckily, there were no signs here.
I looked back towards the house as green spores flowed out of the top window and cracks in the house. If this has worked, then any second I should get-
1x Demihuman archer Slain!
1x human warrior slain!
2x human wizard slain!
1x priest slain!
12,000 xp earned!
Level up awarded 6 –>7]
4 points awarded.
*Bang* one of the doors swung open as a beet-red and swollen corpse fell through the door.
“WOAH- ACCORDING TO OUR TRACKER…… NO WAY 5 WITH ONE MOVE. OUR GIRL KUSAMURE IS BACK! GIVE HER AN APPLAUSE!”
I rolled my eyes at this guy… however, I couldn't be mad; I got a level out of this, which is always good. Suddenly, the girl started walking towards the house.
“I wouldn’t go near that if I was you” She stopped dead in her tracks and stared at the body of the person I killed. She stared at the body for a brief moment before staring at me.
“Are you gonna cry?” I mocked. I wonder if this is how Diva saw me when we first met? Was I this pathetic?
“No…its just……” She shook her head.
“If I have to remind you, they would have killed us if I didn't attack first. There is no room for mercy in this place….”
“I Know…..i know…..”
“Good.” I looked back towards the house, still oozing mushroom spores, and suddenly had an idea; That If it works it could win me the whole tournament and net me a whole load of XP. And points.
“Come here”, the girl instantly perked up and ran towards me. In the meantime, I scanned the surroundings and noticed a tall clock tower Overlooking the town. That will do nicely. The pure spirit stopped shortly before me and followed my gaze to the clock tower.
“ What do you plan to do?”
I looked towards her and gave her a smile. “Thin the herd.” Her face twisted as I said those words. But I didn’t care. This has gone on long enough.
“Pure spirit, I need you to sneak to the top of that clock tower and wait for me.”
“W…what w..why?” she stammered as she stared towards the clock tower
“Do you want to die?!” I yelled, causing her to shake her head furiously. “Good, then do what I say, pure spirit. AND GET UP THERE!”
She let out a squeal as she bolted towards the tower. Her timidness pisses me off to no end.
<big sis? Why did you send her away? don’t you need her>
<Need is a stretch. She is useful to me. That is all. Once her usefulness ends, she will be as good as dead. As for why what I plan to do here can be done a lot faster without her>
I took a deep breath and started channelling mana to my head. At the same time, dozens of mana-rich spores started dropping to the ground. Let's hope All that practice wasn’t a waste of time.
********
A few weeks ago…..
Mana flowed out of me towards the pile of spores that were in front of me. Come on, just how hard is it for me to do what I want?! I channelled more and more mana out of my body, but the spores didn’t budge one bit.
“This is hopeless.” My shoulders slugged forward as I looked towards the pile of mushroom spores.
“What hopeless?” A snobbish voice said from behind me.
“Andre, what brings you here UNINVITED.”
“Just came to see my pupil. What's wrong with that?” He said as he walked past me and towards the 2 piles of poisonous spores.
“I wouldn’t get to clo-“Suddenly, a ball of water erupted around his head. “If I had to guess. Poison and a potent one at that. Did this come from you?” he said with a slightly gurgled tone. You're telling me this guy can breathe underwater? Just what is this guy?
“Yes. I'm trying to….. make It grow.”
“Can't you do that anyway?”
“When I'm touching them, yes. As it stands now, there isn't much I can't grow when I'm touching it, but it's very limiting.”
“that doesn’t make sense. I've seen you grow things without touching them.”
I shook my head. “ with that method, I'm just using my mana as an extension of myself. I'm still touching it in a way,”
“Well, what's wrong with that? Still does the job right?” Andre replied as he examined the spores closer. Does this man have a death sentence?
“It does, but the range is limited. The max range I can send a mana pulse is around 2 meters in a radius around me. After that, the mana usage is too much. I would spend more mana extending the radius than I would activating the spell.”
“I see. Quite the conundrum. Well, what will you do?”
What will I do? I can't make the radius bigger due to diminishing returns. So what now? I've tried to “transmit” my mana to the spores, but that Is also not working. Dammit, what else can I do? There has to be a way of doing this because I've seen some of the teachers at that accursed academy do it.
“Apollinaris, would you please take a look at this”
Andre stuck his finger out, and a small bubble of water popped out of the fingertips. Instantly, the bubble started to dart around the room, pinging off every single wall like it was possessed.
“Is this really the time to be showing off!?” I said, ducking to the side as the ball of water rushed past the side of my head.
“No. But how do you think I control this bubble of water?”
“You…. Transmit your will to it using mana?”
“close. But there is no transmitting here. The water is my mana. The problem is you're thinking that the water and the mana are 2 separate things when they aren't. The water is my mana, and seeing how it is my mana, it is subject to my will. It is a part of me. And Seeing how it is a part of me, I don’t need to transmit anything…”
“I think I understand what you're trying to say. But the spores are not made of mana! They are separate from me in a way. Sure, they come from me, but they have nothing to do with magic!”
“Hahaha, don’t get so worked up,” he said as he started walking toward me. I'm sure you can find a way to remedy that problem. You’re a smart girl, Apollinaris. I have faith in you.” The bubble flew toward Andre before stopping shortly in front of him. With a snap of his fingers, the bubble fizzled into nothingness.
Without saying anything more, he walked away and out of the training room. I thought about what he said. Andre believes the problem I'm having is that I'm treating the spores and my mana as 2 different things when, in reality, I should treat them as one. Hmmmm…..
I started channelling mana into my head. I swear, if this works, Andre will become the most insufferable man in the world…..
